Moon-lighting

Is moon-lighting allowed during residency? I have heard conflicting answers? Does it depend on where you do your residency?

I currently work at a US medical school. Moonlighting is officially not allowed for any employee or student of the school (including residents who have cross appointments with the local hospitals).

However, I know of a few third year residents who do moonlight at a local urgent care clinic. I don’t know what would happen to them if they got caught.

Ya, I've heard of situations like that. I would be tempted to do it. I mean, if you could make an extra grand every weekend that would help a lot in repaying the loans.

freida site

If you go on the freida site and chose a particular specialty and hospital you will get a screen that includes much info including number of positions, salary etc. one of the questions answered is wheter moonlighting is allowed during the residency

Some places have opportunity for in-house moonlighting. It is very program specific. G

It depends on the program. Generally IM residents are less likely to moonlight than EM or psych. Also in a big city like NY where there are plenty of doctors its harder to moonlight than in alabama or mississippi where there are shortages. During some of my EM interviews i've heard that some programs unoficially ENCOURAGE moonlighting for the experience, of course this is after the resident is licensed (2nd or 3rd year) as long as the hours are <80/wk. It might be different for us imgs - check out fsmb for state licensing rules...

and then there are the places where the US med school grads right next to you can get their permanent licenses, and start moonlighting, but you have to wait til you're done with residency if you are an IMG.
