    Thumbs down Downsides of HMI

    Advertisements

Alot of people in the posts have been asking for straight fwd answers as to what really is the issue with the school and HMI

-the commericals are not real--you are paying for them
-you are paying double the tuition regardless of what anyone says because they have these "semester fees" that goes to hmi for your paperwork which they don't complete on time anyway nor do they email or stay in contact with you unless there sending you a bill. there semester fees are like $4,000+ EACH semester, plus a $10,000 seat fee (really??) plus your tuition to the school which is like 6-7,000$ each semester or so. Not to mention your apt rent, food, books, ticket fees etc...you will be in super debt by the time you actually graduate.(oh and you never graduate on time--you usually take a goodd 6 months or so off to take kaplan and study for your boards because you are not taught everything)which brings me to---
-you teach yourself everything. you basically just read and learn everything on your own and take kaplan before your boards to make sure you learn and refresh everything the right way (kaplan is not cheap another $3-4,000)
-Rotations in US--NY (wycoff hospital) is not a great place, its every foreign kid in there, and they are losing green book. Illinois is decent. They do not have canada, they lost ohio, tenessee, and a few other hospitals. They only have a psych rotation in shreveport, LA.
-you do not get anything done on time from them. all in all the staff there is picky with kids. and majority of the kids there are from highschool, and whose parents forced them into the program. Some of the kids don't realize the amount of debt you acquire by the end plus interest. Its not cheap. applying for residencies and paperwork is not cheap. the school and hmi will milk you for your last penny and in the end you will be so frustrated with them and can't wait to be done with them.

The doubled tuition is still less than what it would be if you went to a US school, just FYI, and the rotations are expensive anywhere you go... not just due to HMI. Also, the Polish rotations offer cheaper alternatives if you're willing to stay. I also heard that the school dean went to california this summer to get CA rotations. Not sure at what stage those are in (or if they fell through), but the dean coming to chat has to be a good sign ^_^.

I agree, the program has major flaws. Some due to the school, some due to the students (and if you attend, you KNOW that's true). HMI is an agent. It's their job to take your money, so why everyone is surprised and offended each time is kinda silly. It's like using valet parking and then getting mad that the guy wants you to pay him.

    Elssha,

if your a dr or a student you must have way too much free time to sit here and reply thoughtfully, and from browsing the other forums once in awhile you pop up everywhere, and you def. sound like an agent. Valet parking? atleast valet's don't hike up prices, and they will bring you the car..the school doesn't do anything. And also the dean visiting california is so stupid, I mean of all the 50 states to get rotations in why would you pay and go to stupid california??? theres not even many residency seats there and there not IMG friendly anyways, if the caribbean can't get cali that fast, what makes you think lublin is going to ace it?? the school needs to get other hospitals (i even tried to give them a list of all the places that are accredited and img friendly and they did nothing about it..try for florida, kentucky, texas, nevada, etc...the carribbean may be a bit more expensive but atleast you have rotations in like a billion states and not to mention alot of the residencies still accept carribbean schools and are well known. and honestly if your worried about paying more to go to a US school, atleast going to a US school you are 100% guaranteed a residency, not to mention you wont need to sit there and learn the stuff on your own and do kaplan and take so much time off bcuz the school can't do things on time. Think fast and think hard before giving away advice to kids...you want them to end up in hundreds and thousands of dollars in debt for something they couldve acheived in the US( btw--they also offer scholarships and federal grants in the US--poland can't even give you a a scholarship discount--most other european schools give you a scholarship discount towards your tuition) HMI takes your money and spends it on stupid things, they can't even pull a decent graduation its a convention with a stupid convention banner in the background, rather then have school banners and their invites are super cheap looking, my high school grad invites were alot nicer and formal looking...so just stop bragging about the school, they can't do anything right, they change rules last minute and expect you to find out on your own, rather tell everyone about it before hand. They need to learn how to organize, think, and have better accountants and staff there, oh and the secretary in lublin hates everyone. shes so picky with people that she likes. its all red tape and money there. if you have rich parents go right ahead. if your a smart middle class kid...stay in the US, get a degree on a scholarship and strive for a better life with better schools.

Where, exactly, did I brag about the school? If you read my post, I agreed that the program has flaws... and that HMI doesn't do much of anything.
As for the dean, a family friend told us he was in Cali working on getting rotations because she works with him. I doubt she'd lie. If anything comes of it, I don't know... and made it clear I'm sketchy on the details.
Moldy can tell you I'm not an agent; we're in the same class. Just finished my first yr (of 4). The reason I'm 'on here a lot' is mostly because I remember waiting a long time to get some info because people weren't around.
Oh, and for your information, NO SCHOOL can guarantee you residency... and any med school requires a lot of self learning, no matter where you go. I have friends at UCI med school (University of California, Irvine) that said the same thing. A classmate who did a year in the Caribbean ( I want to say Ross, but I'm not sure) said they did some shady stuff as well. Notably making the exams extra difficult for the fall group so they'd have to drop into the winter and/or spring as time went on so that they could get more money... alongside them demanding you learn material yourself. From her account they expected more from students, but mostly for the sake of prolonging their education (and thus their tuition).
And just so we're clear... I do think there's a lot wrong with the school. If I remember right Moldy saw a couple of my hissy fits about the Dean's Office being utterly useless. Personally, I think they need to revamp how they deal with things, but a lot of it is a cultural thing where they're used to the students (polish) being far more organized and used to digging up information themselves vs our undergrad experience (I really do miss my UG, where all the academic advisors had to do was give you some links to appropriate info).
As for the long response... I've got a ** in English... this took me under10min to type up ^_~

    Upsides of HMI
    1.You save half the tuition
2.You get in faster than us schools or carib school "easier"
    3.You get to experience europe
4.Living is much cheaper than anywhere in the world "cheap rent, cheap restaurants.
5.You deal with nice HMI personal who will try to help you as much as possible!

As far as Downsides its all how you make it!

One good side is that they will get you in to school, but thats the only one.. after that all the things are down the drain...
