Thread: For those renting apartments in Lublin

Hi. I have a few questions:

How does it work exactly with renting - how much are utilities? I just found out that there are three hundred different ways an apartment could be heated - gas, electrical, central, etc... each has it's pros and cons, but I know the price can run pretty high for different ones...

What about water - there also also few ways that water could be heated - through a ... hmm... junkers (don't know how to translate that) or through a boiler for the whole building... again the prices can run high... What's the cost for your utilities in practical terms? Do apartments for rent usually have heating costs included?

I'm VERY confused... I'm starting to think I should rent an app. for the minimum because when the costs pile up it will end up being like $1000.00 I found numerous adds for like 1000.00 zl (2 bedroom) which seems very low and these are advertised as being specifically for students, no pics are provided should I assume they are not even worth looking at? Also most of them are in Srodmiescie which is odd cause those should be the most expensive ones!

Do you guys know of any appartments that will be vacant as of September - if so please PM me - I would love to skip the hassle and have something set up!

The best way to find an apartment is by coming here first, if you want a vacant apartment you have to pay for half of the summer which sucks. But in your case I would just wait until I get here because it's almost impossible to play it by ear unless you have some friends Here who are willing to save their spots for you. As the far as the renting situation it's pretty cheap compared to us standards utilities come out to be about 100zloty eith electric and gas plus about 60 zloty for Internet. In the winter the heat may be more cause it's used frequently. Otherwise if you have anymore questions let me know.

Well is a week before orientation enough time to start looking? Should I go even earlier than that? Will the univ provide me with some resources when it comes to that? And in order to pay say $700 - $800 (which I would say would be my max with utilities for me and my roommate together) per month what would the actual rent have to be?

The main problem you would have with coming early is that you'd have no place to stay while looking for an apartment and that you wouldn't have a ride from the airport to Lublin (2+ hours depending on traffic). I doubt you'd be too comfortable taking trains as your first venture in a new country, especially since the train station is not walking distance to the airport. So you'd be looking at
flight -> cab to the train station -> train to Lublin (or bus, to be fair) -> Taxi from train/bus station to whatever hotel you rent
You can take a taxi to Lublin, but the fare will be ~$200 (usd) min.
Then you have to calculate what a hotel will cost you (which I don't know, to be honest). If you know people here you could try to crash on someone's couch in a dorm, but I figure you wouldn't be looking for intel if you did have a friend already here.

On the up side, you'd basically beat the apartment rush many of your incoming classmates will be in upon their arrival, and you won't be suffering jetlag while trying to get all your stuff together, unpack, settle in, etc. The older students (my year, for instance) will start classes before the first years, so there *will* be people around campus you can ask for a little help of the 'where and how can I get/do X, Y and Z' variety. A wallmart-like store is walking distance from where the apts/dorms people usually get are, and there's a sizable mall (mostly clothes) in a different direction, so asking someone to help you shop won't really inconveniance them (specially since they need food, at least).
Basically, you need to think if coming here early, foregoing free lodging and a transport to said lodging with people who are in the same position as you is worth it.

When the students arrive they get a place to stay automatically for example prusa dorms or lange vicha with the choice to sign a contract and stay; When i first came i had a place to stay for a week which was langes, until i actually found something on my own in private Prusa housing. The rent in Lublin should never be more than 500 us dollars if it is your getting ripped off! Also as a warning when you get here dont do buisness with "MIKE" the agent he's over charging students for finding places. For example Chodzki should be around 900-1400 zlotys a month but he will ask you to pay 2000 zloty's and plus on top of that to pay 6 months in advance so dont do it theres plenty of people who will help you guys find a place.

ok so will I have enough time if I come on the 26 (orientation starts on the 27) and look then? Isn't orientation all week long all day long? and most importantly where do I look? will the school give me some info/ adds/ newspaper/ agent?
