hey kirti, i am a third year student in lublin. assuming you're coming into the american program in lublin through hope, most of the students in your class will be indian and everyone will speak english. and maybe this is because i'm biased, but it's a better school than silesia is bc all raj and mahendra patel (the rulers of hmi) sent their kids to lublin instead of silesia.

is HMI a good thing to go through, because my Dad is not agreeing with me to go through them. He wants me to apply direct to Poland.

i was in the exact same situation as you two years ago. i didn't know whether or not to apply through an agent (in this case, HMI). there are pros and cons and it all depends on what you hold as your priorities. overall, i'm not a huge fan of HMI, but i like our school (HMI gets you into the school and handles everything except for your education, which is completely in the school's hands).

the major con for HMI is that they charge you much more money than they deserve. tuition per semester is $5700 to the school and $3k to hmi; i understand paying the school that much but i don't understand why i need to pay hmi. plus, your first year they charge you a one-time fee of $10k for "seat allocation." it seems like money is priority number one for HMI bc they accept a lot of kids who SHOULD NOT be in medical school, but they accept them and keep them in the program just so they can get their money. as you can imagine, that brings USMLE score averages down and has soured the reputation of HMI among some of the american hospitals that HMI used to have rotations in.

but like i said, HMI has some undeniable benefits, too. you can get stafford loans (that have much lower interest rates than private loans) with HMI that you can't get if you applied directly. they offer rotations in chicago, tennessee, and nyc; if you apply to programs directly, your rotations are in poland. when you are applying to residency and doing your step 2 of usmle, those american rotations will be an amazing asset to you. another thing (which i don't really have numbers to back up, to be honest) is that of all the programs and schools in poland, i'm sure HMI has produced the most american doctors. you will also be surrounded by students in the same situation as you (indian-american students studying to practice medicine in america).

also, you shouldn't take a lot of what ppl say on valueMD about HMI bc it seems like most of the critics didn't even go through the program. when seeking advice, seek it from ppl that are/were in the program. a lot of ppl on valuemd say that hmi is a bad educational program, but i say hmi is an EXPENSIVE program that deals more with what opportunities are available to you rather than your direct educational experience bc that is rooted mostly in your own hard work and determination.

so the bottom line is if you are willing to pay a lot more money, but for american rotations, the ability to use stafford loans, and probably the most experienced american program in poland.

sorry if my post is wordy; i'm not too good at organizing my thoughts when i type

ps. if you go to their website, hopemedicaleducation.com, they have a list of students that are currently in residency, and they also have a "testimonial" thing by former students. i wouldn't take the testimonial thing too seriously bc there's not a single critical opinion in any of them, but the residency list was really helpful for me bc it made me relieved that ppl went through hope and succeeded.

I am just lost...I know one person who did it through HMI and is now here in states. I have been trying to contact, but no luck from that person. I went on the website to apply, however, it has written over there that I should contact HMI to apply for this university.
I feel its a crazy world full of crazy people sometimes.

ok, to apply what you need to do is go to hopemedicaleducation.com/admission_application.html and click on the "application for admission" link, fill that out, and send it in as quick as possible bc school starts pretty soon. in this case hmi's lax admissions process will help you out bc they'll probably rush it through.

cool, i have done that....they were saying it they will rush....I feel sometimes that they arent giving me all the info that I need to know. If I do happen to go to Lublin, what are like my fees. Online I found out that I need to giv 5700 to uni, and 3000 to hmi, and the 200 for the appl. and at last 10000 to hmi upfront. is that true? the 5700+3000 per semester for 4 yrs? I have to call them today asap to find out about my application. Your posts have been alot of help to me....

yeah, you have the tuition right. tuition is def more expensive than other places in poland, that's for sure. living expenses aren't too bad. it's cheaper than a lot of cities in poland and cheaper than america, but poland is a growing country and the dollar has been dropping. but your living expenses are based mostly on how you live. for example, if you walk to your classes it's free (obviously), if you take the bus, it's about 50 cents for each ride, and if you take the taxi, it's about 4-5 dollars each ride (but you can split it with 3 other ppl). i think rent your first year (there is a set apt for first years that is pretty small, but relatively cheap) is about 1100-1200 dollars a month (but you will have 2-4 other roommates to split that with). after your first year, you can find other apts that are closer to school and the prices vary depending on where you get it and how many ppl live with you. i know ppl that pay about $300 per month each and i know ppl that pay more than $800 each. meals at restaurants are somewhere between 5 to 15 dollars. so like i said, it's a lot based on the decisions you make regarding living expenses.

also, i'm not sure what you pay during rotations; rotations fees are paid on a weekly basis and it all depends on where you do them i think.
