I guess to keep the spot, just in case something else fell through.. they knew the week before school started, but all 4 of us had made the decision weeks before.
None of us knew each other, by the way.

Just saying whats up. I've been coming to the forum for a while now, and reading most of the posts. Only just decided to register today though. This site has been extrememly helpful. Anyways, I applied to MUA for September '08, and received notification of an interview which will be held on July 9. Wish me luck, and thanks again for all the good posts that have been so helpful.

Interview was rescheduled for 7/19 due to accreditation mtgs! The madness!
I'll let you all know how it goes after it's all over...and I chose to do a personal interview. They asked me what my preference was, seeing as I am from Rhode Island. A phone interview would have been good, but I guess I want to show them how serious I am, so maybe a personal interview would look a little bit better. I'm not saying it will get me in, but it may look a bit better, seeing as I am not that far away and have the option.

Hi guys.,
It seems like some peopel are being interviewed for Sept of 08. Does that mean that Jan 08 is currently full? Because I called the office this Thursday and she said my application has be sent to the committie for review but still no word of it.,

I'm not too sure about that, I only applied for September of '08 because I have 1 more year left of undergrad work. So, I just want to make sure I have my bachelors degree before I get to the next level.
However, you should have no trouble receiving an interview, so don't get yourself too stressed out. They received my completed application on about June 25, and on June 27 I was notified, by e-mail, that I had received an interview. I'm sure it is different for everybody. I think this is probably a busy week for the institution because my interview was supposed to be tomorrow (July 9 at 10:30 AM), but they sent me an e-mail last weekend telling me I needed to reschedule it for July 19 at 10:30 AM due to the administration having accreditation meetings. Don't worry, you'll get an interview. My stats are not nearly the best as some of the previous posters I read, but I still received one. My cumulative GPA is 2.92, and my science GPA is 3.20, both scales are out of 4.0. I stressed in my personal statement that my cumulative GPA had declined (because it used to be around 3.30) for extenuating reasons relating to health, and that the performance I had during that one semester was not really me being the student I know I had been in previous semesters. Another valid point I made was that even though I had received bad grades for that 1 semester, my record as a whole had been relatively consistent, and that the courses which the school requires as mandatory (GChem, OChem,GBio,English, and even tho physics isnt required but reccomended) I had done very well in, receiving grades of: Gen Chem: A-, B+ OChem: A-, B Gen Bio: A-, A- English B, B+, along with the majority of my other courses being in the B, B+ ranges. The only bad grades I ever received were 2 F's in these 2 core classes due to the health issue, and it taking up much of my time. However, I still got an interview, and you will too.. A big thing also, stress your clinical exposure, whether it be research, shadowing, or having a job in a hospital or clinical setting. That really does go a long way. Get good letters of rec from people who know you not just academically, but who really know you as a person. It's easy for someone to say "Person X wants to become a physician because they have great grades, and they are a studious individual." Getting someone to elabortate upon your studies, and personal attributes is even better. One of my letters of rec (I got lucky and the person actually read it to me...after they had mailed it out, of course) a doctor whom I know relatively well stressed my personal qualities, and how by them I would make a great physician one day. In terms of academics, he never taught me in the classroom or anything of that nature, but he did say that from our talks throughout the years, he knew I was receiving relatively good grades, and that from that he would support the fact that I would be a good student (in terms of academics) for the program. You essentially want someone who can backup what you say about yourself in your application/personal statement. For example, with mine, the doctor stressed the health issue that I wrote about in my personal essay, so the school would know that I was really telling the truth on it, and that 1 semester was really not to the best of my ability. I didn't take the MCAT, but I feel that I present a strong case for acceptance into the program. I've had tons and tons of research/clinical exposure/hospital employment dating back to the summer of 2003, I put my whole heart and soul into my personal statement, but was quick and to the point about what I wanted to say. It ended up being about 5 pages, but I had much to talk about, but was not lengthy with each section. Also, my letters of rec were well written (well, at least the one I was able to read...but, I'm sure the other one was done quite well, too). Relax, don't stress, if you have better stats then me (without MCAT, too) then you will be fine.
