Belize
Belize is somewhat underdeveloped country(2nd world status) There is not much to see and unfortunately can be unsafe in some areas. The medical schools here are pretty small and can lack some of the resources that the American or Canadian medical schools have(such as histology labs and adequate anatomy labs).
It is difficult to get by here. Public transportation(schoolbuses)is not dependable(schedule wise) and most are in 'worn down shape'. They also tend to be overcrowded. Regarding Food/Groceries- they are expensive and choices can be limited. There are no major supermarkets or American fast food outlets. Housing can be difficult to find and most houses need work done on them. While the people are friendly, you do have to beware especially if you're a foreigner(since tourists are thought to be rich). There is crime, especially in Belize city so you should be aware at all times. If you're considering Belize campus, I would recommend if you could to visit the med school beforehand and the country to see if you would really want to live here for 2 years. |

Belize campus
I have been to the Belize campus and am starting in January. I wanted to see what was there before I made a commitment. The island is pretty nice (www.ambergriscaye.com) and the crime rate is not high. Looking in the newspaper, the crimes were fights, possession of pot, carrying a rider on bike handle bars who was over the age of 10, petty theft, but nothing to rough. There were several grocery stores, meat shops, veggie stands. It's a tourist island so they have pretty much everything. The draw back that I saw was that it does not have paved roads. They are still sand with a few 'cobblestone' sections so its dusty and the students said really muddy when it rains. Most of the students ride bikes to school or rent golf carts. The cars are mainly taxis and business. But the islands flat so I walked everywhere when I was there. It was easy to get around and the island people were very friendly and helpful.
There are several airlines that fly directly into Belize City and then you take a 15 minute jump flight over to the island. The campus is new and good size. There was still some contruction going on but there were three lecture halls, a lab and the library what were ready and the faculty offices and reception area. The students seems happy. All talked good about the school, faculty and administration. I think the best thing is to check it out for yourself and then make your decision. |

MUA Belize/MUA Nevis -- Big Difference
Wire21 is confused. MUA Belize is on a Belizean Island called Ambergris Caye. Wire21 is commenting on Belize, the mainland. The information posted is definitely misleading since MUA Belize is not on the mainland. As for the school, MUA Belize is getting its act together. Give them some time plus a year or two. Until then, MUA Nevis is a more stable, more academic environment. Students are doing amazing on their Step 1 as well. MUA Nevis is the best bet between both schools which incidentally are not affiliated.
