MUA degrees in Oregon

The State of Oregon has joined other states in BANNING recognition of medical degrees from MUA.

See: http://www.osac.state.or.us/oda/unaccredited.html

Seems MUA is joining the Caribbean medical schools on Antigua and IUHS on St. Kitts in being banned by name in several states due either to each school's home government's dubious reputation for medical school accreditation or each school's lack of credible facilities and/or failure to pass or submit to onsite inspections by state departments of education.

Regarding ultimate licensing, prospective students must consult the state department of education and the State Medical Board of any state in which he/she hopes to practice medicine. And remember: These lists of banned SOM's can change--for better or worse--literally over night. Banned today, but approved tomorrow; or approved today and banned tomorrow.

actually

what's equally disturbing is that the site is using the colloqual phrase "diploma mill". Using an emotive term shows a real agenda rather than distanced professionalism. Not permitting licensure from a school they do not feel is worthy of it is fine and right. Talking about "diploma mills" sounds an aweful lot like Inside Edition. I am unclear if they are affiliated with the government of the state of oregon.

well...

From http://www.osac.state.or.us/oda/about.html
Quote:
The Office of Degree Authorization is required by statute "to provide for the protection of the citizens of Oregon and their postsecondary schools by ensuring the quality of higher education and preserving the integrity of an academic degree as a public credential." ODA administers laws, standards, and services that protect students, holders of legitimately earned degrees, institutions, businesses, employers, patients or clients, and licensing boards.

The ODA authorizes approved schools (under OAR 583-030) to offer academic degree programs, validates individual claims of degree possession, terminates substandard or fraudulent degree activities, and reviews proposed new publicly funded postsecondary programs and locations (under OAR 583-040), disapproving those that would cause duplication detrimental to other segments of education.

A school that is not a part of the public postsecondary system of Oregon or a regionally accredited Oregon independent instituion may offer to confer an academic degree, or provide services leading to a degree in whole or in part, only after obtaining approval from the ODA.

An individual may claim to possess an academic degree only if it has been awarded by a school that has accreditation recognized by the United States Department of Education, or the foreign equivalent of such accreditation, or otherwise has authorization to offer and confer degrees in Oregon.

ODA works with the 8 public four-year institutions, 17 public community colleges, about 50 independent and non-Oregon institutions approved to offer full degree programs to Oregon residents (plus many others that offer courses for college credit), and several schools specially approved under exemption to offer limited-title degrees in theology and religious occupations.

Looks pretty official to me!

You can hardly state that no reply in 14 hours means the school is a scam. Also, this isnt an official MUA forum.

not a scam

these are very upsetting & disturbing news especially people like me actually here seeing the school is real, not a scam. I too am very puzzle why MUA is on those list. I think MUA is better than many other Carribean schools, though not among the top 4.

It has large self-owned campus, 3 labs, real cadevars (not just 2) a large library, study area, computers, microscope, over 20 professors, recreation facilities etc. etc. Real classess and real students, I don't think MUA should be on those lists.

Hope these will be rectified soon.

Let's not panic just yet...

Hello
As far as i know, i'm the only 'school official' that regularly posts here...as far as an 'immediate' response goes, it is saturday and I do live on Nevis...so forgive me/us if i haven't posted earlier (yes, that was a extremely slightly sarcastic apology).
We can all speculate til the cows come home, but I have informed the head office in case they do not regularly peruse this unofficial forum, and I'm sure they will look into it right away.
Given that most people on these forums seem to place mua below some schools and above others, it seems odd that so few carribean schools are on that list, particularly the ones 'below' mua.
Therefore, no one be panicking just yet...i'll pass on whatever information i get from the head office.
Does not seem to be much else to say on this, as very little info is present at this time.
Anyway, i'm sure you all have studying to do
D
