impossible to match in Canada?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of something that I don't..I've been reseraching the whole process involved with obtaining a residency in Canada, and it seems like that even if you are a 99% student and get perfect on your boards you probably will not match in Canada if entering the US match.

As I understand it, Canada and the US have a reciprocal agreement in that, if a person matches in one country, they are automatically taken out of the match of the other country. I think the US match happens 2 days prior to the Canadian match (correct me if i'm wrong)...so the only way I see someone is able to match in Canada is if they do NOT enter the US match and kind of cross their fingers hoping to match in Canada; or if they enter both matches and fail to match in the US, and match in Canada (which seems kinda unlikely, since it sounds like the US is easier on IMGs than Canada).

So how are people matching in Canada? I've seen 1 or 2 on the MUA Nevis residency page of Canadian matches; do these people have serious 'connections' in which residency directors of Canada tell them 'don't enter the US match, we'll have something for you..wink wink'

Am I missing something? I'm Canadian if you can't tell lol..and just I hear of people saying they want to come back to Canada all the time..going to the caribbean don't you have to kind of accept the fact that in most likelihood you will have to move to the US? (as I've accepted pretty much)

Just this has been bugging me for a while, as I hear a lot of Caribbean med students hoping to come back to Canada. Thought this would be a good thread for us Canadians..any comments welcome!

I read in one of the threads here that if you've applied to the US and Canada, and if you match in the US, then you get taken out of CARMs...

However, if you do not match in the US, then you still remain in the Canadian system to be matched. Basically, you will not be deleted from CARMs if you apply to both and are rejected from the US.

The 'Residency '07' thread contains a post by Robin saying that he/she interviewd at U of T and UM, which is excellent for all us hopeful Canadians!

Hey everyone just wanted to let ya all know that I have gotten interviews at the University of Toronto and University of Manitoba for residency in Pathology. I loved both but my #1 is for UT. I pray March 14th matches me to one of them. UT had 170 applications for IMGs and only interviewed 23. They accept 6. This is the first year that IMGs can go in the 1st round of the Canadian match. Wish me luck and pray for me on March 14!!!

Has anyone got pre-match offers, matches in the SF match, etc. Love to know.

Hope that helps!
Are at MUA already?

2007 is a great year for International Medical Grads (IMGs) in Canada.

this is the first year that there are parallel and competitive match streams for international medical graduates (IMGs) in all provinces except Alberta*. in the past, severe restrictions limited the match to only graduates from English-speaking Canada. French was only added in 2006.

this year, IMGs and Canadians match at the same time in Manitoba and Québec, competing head-to-head in the first round in a similar fashion as the US matching program. IMGs have a separate (parallel) stream of postions in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia in the first round and compete with Canadian grads in the second round.

IMGs have a separate (parallel) stream of positions in both the first and second rounds in Ontario.

check the CaRMS website for more info.

PS: Canada's first round matches one day before the USA.

EDIT: and to answer your original post question... if you have 99% board exams and only want to match in Canada, then just don't rank any schools in the US. simple. : )

[*according to the CaRMS website, it doesn’t look like IMGs are able to apply for a residency spot in Alberta at all.]
