School housing admin does (Ms.S.L. and the rest of them), they base it on the housing form you filled out, whether you are single or married, what your preferences were. for the single rooms and placement at potworks it is based on availability and who applied for it first. If you go to the island early and are able to find your own place to rent, am sure that is fine with them. They recommend incoming first termers stay at the dorms, as it provides them a ready place to stay while getting acquainted with the island as well as medical school.

30- 40 minutes does make more sense, forgot having to walk down that long hill.

Ps. Dont' call me "buddy".
Guys, Please stop arguing if it 12 or 40minutes walk. Has anybody heard someting called "speed" in physics? if you walk 10km/hr, it takes 40minutes or if you walk 20km/hr it takes 20minutes...thas why scientists use more applicable terminology when they talk about these kind of stuff. So end of the discussion; It is about 4km. do your own math how long it takes you to walk... it is very hot here and the books and the computer makes it harder. best thing is get a car..

For the most part you do have to live in dorms for atleast term 1 (med1), however with the growing number of students and students in special situation (ie. spouse) they can opt out. If you decide to opt out make sure you have a good reason.

People have different view of the dorms. I had the dorm where you have you own place (don't have a roommate potworks). My first impression of a bit of shock because it is small and simple. After about a week I got use to it and it is more than enough to get you by. I've since moved out of potworks and love my new place. There are some awesome places available but you will need to get a car (ie. 10-15 drive). There is also a new dorm being built close to school.

I've attached a few pictures of the inside of a potworks apartment that a med1 student would get.
