510 points I think you answered this question during your interview when you were asked "why do you want to be a doctor?" We all have our reasons for going to a caribbean medical school. I know I am stressing about going because I will be 2 years away from home (and out of the country). Maybe it is for the money and status or maybe it's the warm fuzzy feeling you get inside when you save someone's life. Something inside of you brought you this far so I say run with it and go for it.Originally Posted by radct

510 points I have been detered also. I thought about getting an MBA at one point. Leaving home for so long is what is really getting to me, but I have accepted it and will continue with it. I have gone through alot of situations in my life time and when I look at leaving home for so long, it's a drop in the bucket compared to everything else I have been through. Don't worry, you'll be fine.Originally Posted by radct
I was really apprehensive at first at the idea of going down to an island, living so far away from NY and etc, etc....then I realized its all about the perspective you have from day one and how you mentally prepare yourself. If you approach this as a hassle and a nearly impossible task then yes it is going to be doubly harder and you will be miserable....personally I'm looking at it as an experience I wouldn't have been able to have otherwise....yeah you're going to be far away from home, away from family but I mean most of the people starting medical school are 22+....not children anymore and all of these things are just a part of your life.

If it was easy everyone would be a doctor. Just look at it as an initiation into a very exclusive club. Once you're in, think about the satisfaction you'll get by being a member.
I am 37, I am still going, call me crazy but I tell myself age is #'s and nothing more than that. The only reason I am doing this is to get lots of money, just kidding but a very expensive car will be nice.
510 points Hi, I perfectly understand how you feel because I have asked myself these questions a couple of times. I have also had to answer the questions by myself. I am 36 and married with 3 cute little boys! I know it is going to be tough whether I come down to the Island with my family or leave them in the States. People have made all sorts of discouraging comments but guess what, as far as I am concerned, they are talking to themselves. The only one that can stop me is me, and that is only and only if I strongly feel that God does not want me to continue. But I know that is not likely to happen because I am on a mission for Him, and I know He will see me through.Originally Posted by radct
So back to your question again, "is it worth it?" YES, every second of it is worth it. Just identify the reason that made you decide to be a doctor and hold on to it. The length of time (6-7years) and the rigors may be discouraging but you know what? even if you don't go to Med school, 7 years will still come and pass!! Just hang in there ok?
