Time Is Of The Essence
I AM RIGHT BEHIND FOSSIL DOC AT 57 YEARS OLD.
Accepted for SMU and MUA-Nevis, I turned down Nevis for SMU. I am getting some heat from family members about cost of medical school etc. etc. I am not playing the standard role of a typical grandfather yet. SMU is very costly. I called the office today and I was told there will be seats available for Jan '06. Anyone, know for sure about the census?? What are my chances of acceptance, I mentioned time is of the essence as I am booked for a flight to the Cayman Islands on Monday and returning to Honolulu on Friday. I might be able to reschedule the flight paying small a fine and visit Belize first and go on through to the Cayman. BA Psych minor/zoo/chem CUM 2.7 Sciences - 2.5 University of Hawaii 1980 , ASN Nursing - 3.5 Excelsior College, New York 2002. 15,000 + hrs clinical exposure mostly ER work, also licensed as EMT-P. No MCAT. Belize sounds a little more modern than Nevis but probably more like Cayman. I have a business concern so need high speed internet access and reliable phone service with fax capability. Would sure appreciate a reply. Thank you in advance. the old Hawaiian Phil |

island
I would strongly recommend you coming and visiting this island. Once, you land you in San Pedro, you will be welcomed by friendly locals and realize what a beautiful, peaceful place this is.
We have everything here : great faculty, early clinical experience in Belize City at one of the major hospitals- KHMH, supportive and understanding administration, beautiful apartments (rent varies- however it won't be nearly as expensive as what you would be paying in Cayman), american style supermarkets, golfcarts, high speed cable internet (64, 128, 256 speed), plenty of restaurants to choose from (inexpensive local cuisine, italian, middle eastern, sushi, steakhouse, seafood), island is very safe, plenty to do & see when we have time off (snorkle, dive, Mayan ruins, Belize City-casino, Cancun, whitewater rafting in the jungle, Butterfly farm), gyms, shopping, clubs. |

philenom: since I just got accepted myself, I can't answer any of your questions, but I'm getting strong vibes that this will be a great school. I think they let you take courses over if you fail, as long as your checks don't bounce. That makes sense, because the idea is to <eventually> acquire the knowledge, even though our old brains may take twice as long to do it as twenty-somethings. The big stress will come during rotations; I clearly don't have the stamina of the youngin's, and I hope they don't work me too hard.

Vibes
When I was "kicked out" of college I attended an unaccredited college in Hawaii, with a temporary campus on church property. Now that school is a Tier II, school and rates above the local State's University and ranks high throughout the nation.
The instructors were caring and afforded the time for you. I get the same vibes about MUAB. As mentioned, these schools are platforms to get through the USMLE and rotations. The numbers in attendance are really not a factor in the whole effort. The answer is really up to the individual. School=5% Student=95%. Preserverance is the key. Does anyone have a word of wisdom? I am brainless and a lousy decision maker at times. Later the old Hawaiian Philenom the old Hawaiian (been around enought to know that you all are aware the income as an MD may be less than that of a nurse right?) But I belive it is still the best job in the world. Last edited by philenom; 10-15-2005 at 10:30 PM. Reason: name confusing at request of fossil doc |
