    Question Belize med schools

    Advertisements

    This is what I understand:

MUA Belize is very good and it is in a nice (safe) area.

CAHSU Decent school, not in the most pleasent location, nice bldg.

St Lukes : Can someone enlighten me on this

AGU : Can someone enlighten me on this.

    here you go

MUA BELIZE is a great school, in the best part of belize, VERY safe, and a modern school building, purpose built from the ground up to serve as a medical campus. we have graduates, and several students passing usmle and dozens in rotations along the east coast of USA.
CASHUE uses a RENTED facility and they tend to relocate within belize city every 2 years, because of rising rent costs and having issues with the building owners. they are located in a walled in compound, the surrounding town is very rough and remote. nearest grocer and resturants are several miles away. plus they were in the news recently for hiring "quack" doctors, people portraying to be physicians with NO FORMAL TRAINING.
st.lukes is a trainwreck, they have moved in and out of belize several times. they have had several accredation issues and also use rented store space.
AGU is a brand new school. it has no track record, uses a rented store front in a despot town and makes a lot of "empty promises".
MUA BELIZE IS THE ONLY SCHOOL WITH A PERMANENT CAMPUS AND THE ONLY ONE IN THE BEST PART OF BELIZE. SAN PEDRO.

This St. Luke's University School of Medicine, Belize has always been in Belize.

I think you are confusing it with another St. Luke that was based in Liberia.

The St. Luke of Belize is a much nicer school than MUA-Belize.

A permanent campus means nothing, especially since the admin is so goofy with its involvement with St. Chris.

    sorry,

no THIS IS THE st.lukes that kept re-locating back and fourth in and out of belize. this is there 4TH MOVE just in belize alone.!!.what happens is the school shuts down due to corruption, and then new owners come in and rent some gov't building and try to get it up and running. have you seen their tuition bill? it's DOUBLE of mua belize, and mua belize has been around 5+ years and NEVER left san pedro.

There are a number of other schools also. Besides MUA, CAHSU, St Lukes and AGU. There is one other, but it seems like a family run company (all the profs have the same last name). I think it is called grace!

But I have heard Good things about MUA and CAHSU.

i realize that people say stuff about MUA-belize.. but i was there as a student and there are the typical problems as in any other school but ultimately they are helpful and understanding and the profs i had are mds. they have clinics in belize and are knowledgeable in their areas. i can only tell you of my experience.. the students are sometimes not so nice... but you form your own support group, find out who is nice and stick to your goal of becoming a md. good luck in your search. the place is nice as well. beautiful area .. watch out for the mosquitoes. got wireless in the library so you can keep in touch with family and friends from back home without spending too much. i know when i was there i was tired, etc but once i got back to the states.. i've realized that everybody complains about their school!!! good luck!
I try to lose weight, but it keeps finding me.Hidden Content

Not sure where you got your info Billy but St. Luke's only made one move from the Alijua building on San Pedro to a new building (leased) just past the Banana Bank Equestrian Center turnoff on the Western Hwy (just past Roaring Creek). They never left Belize nor did they lose their charter (or reprimanded for abuse of said Charter) at anytime, in fact the new charter was initiated by Dr. Coye (a Belizean national by the way) and the Belizean board of medicine so as to follow LCME guidelines (you can call the Ministry of Education if you choose to), and make Belize a credible option for foreign medical schools. I don't recall any members of the MUAB admin being there at anytime in the process. Unfortunately Key Bank pulled out and the school closed for an indefinate time period to see if it could find new funding but still has all its basic infrastructure in place in Belize. Interestingly the six students who remained and finished their basic sciences all just passed Step I on the first try, so that makes eight who passed on the first try and one who will be retaking it. Also, one (of the three SMU transfers who were still with St. Luke's when it stopped taking applications) who transferred from St. Matthew's when it was moving to the Cayman's just passed Step 2 and the CS, again first try.

Also, CAHSU has only moved once in six+ years from a building on the Southern Hwy to the old DataPro buildings at the police checkpoint.

AGU I have no knowledge of. . .

Not sure why you wish to bash (by playing on the ignorance of others who do not have direct knowledge) other schools, especially St. Luke's, when MUAB has skeletons of their own which, I presume you will not display here as readily (a paycheck may be in jeopardy?).

    i know the FACTS

the FACT is st.lukes used to be located in san pedro, on the second floor of a chinese resturant and local mail post. feel free to check san pedro's records. the reason was not funding for their abrupt closure, but due to lack of staff, no student base, and sub-par quality education (SEVERAL STUDENTS TRANSFERED FROM ST.LUKES TO MUA BELIZE) CASHU has been operational for 10 + years. they've relocated 3 or 4 times, plus one cannot forget about the store they rent in Juarez Mexico, which is questionable.

    Billy:
Why are you so fixated on a rented vs a permanent campus? If you are really a MUAB student you know that MUAB IS IN A RENTED BUILDING and that last semester the owner of the building came over and padlocked the doors because the rent had not been paid. And the building looks like it belongs in bombed out down town Bhagdad!

I am in San Pedro right now, and I drove past MUA's campus on my golf cart yesterday. It is a very nice place.

I don't know about whether it is owned, rented or whatever--I'll be finding a lot out about it in the next week as I visit the campus and spend time on the island.

I like the island very much. It has been raining and the roads are muddy and full of puddles, but its a great place here. I'll post more when I find out more.
