Thread: ECFMG Certification and State Licensing Processing Time

So I've matched, but the question is will I be able to get my ECFMG certificate and State Licensing done in time to start. Basically if I'm slated to graduate on June 8th, will this leave enough time to to have both ECFMG certificate processed, and Ohio State Licensing done, by the time I start?

My school has cooperated to make sure my diploma is ready on the day I finish, and I've made sure all of my evals will be in the day I finish, this way my diploma can be sent same-day to ECFMG. If ECFMG gets everything on June 8th, friday, will I be able to be in the clear for a July 1st start?

Any ideas on how to expedite this with either ECFMG as well as ohio state board; or how to go about dealing with residency program coordinator to possibly delay my start by using my vacation days? I dont want to waste a well-earned residency spot because of this. Thanks for you help.

I don't think you'll have to worry about ECFMG being done, but I think the state licensing will be cutting it awfully close. You're probably looking to take a few days into the start to have your letter. You might have to figure out if they will let you use vacation days to do this.

thanks cremaster, do you know anyone that has had a similar situation in the past? what usually happens, how understanding is the program to this kind of delay?

Well, I'm sure the program will be willing to work with you, from what I've heard. But its going to be tight, since you have to understand first you're school sends ECFMG the diploma, then ECFMG will send a request back for transcripts, then they process for your certificate. If there is no delay, I've heard of the turnaround being as short as 2 weeks, but if delayed, you may have to push into first month of residency, worst case scenario.

hey i have been looking into the ecfmg certification also. I go to SGU and we have set diploma dates and our June diploma date is the 15th! I called ECFMG today and they said as long as everything is in and verified by the school, it takes no more than 10 business days. Plus, my coordinator said they do this every year and its never a problem. This would mean exactly July 1 for me and certainly before that for you.

I know that for Texas, you can still apply for the resident license without the ecfmg certificate. As far as the Ohio license is concerned, I don't know anything about that but maybe it's similar.

oh really? wow i didn't think SGU would send diplomas out so late, but i suppose if that many students are submitting late, then I'm sure ECFMG is familiar with this situation.

Also to, I think SGU processing time might be shorter because of the new electronic verifcation thing they launched... maybe. however, i'm not sure if all the schools are participateing in that e-verification thing yet.
