Leave of Absence

Hi Caribbean Docs!

Anybody who can put their two cents worth of input here is welcome to share their ideas. A very close friend of mine who is attending SJSM has been told that he has to pay full tuitions for the semester during which he will be studying for the Step 1. It is something called "Leave of Absence".

Is that the norm in most Caribbean schools or only at SJSM. I am surprised, I have never heard of such thing even from SJSM students.

Please, post your comments.

Typically Leave of Absence is when one must leave the school for whatever reason. I had to take a LOA the other semester for a family emergency, the school refunded all the money and returned them to the lender and then reinstated those loans when I returned.

Typically, the 5th semester for most Caribbean schools is the Kaplan course and intro to clinic, so they are paying full tuition for those and is held on the island.

you pay for 5th which is on the island and you take kaplan as well as other courses. when you leave the island after fifth, no matter if you plan on taking the test the next day or 4 months later, you fill out a LOA form.

you are not charged for this time, only when you turn in a passing score and start your clinicals you start paying tution for that day.

later
