Best schools to land NYC&TX residencies
I'm currently looking at SGU, AUC, and Ross, with a focus on SGU and AUC.
AUC's last class had 8 land in NYC and 1 in TX. SGU looks like it landed 60 in NYC area and 0 in TX. I think this looks positive for SGU, but it's tough to call given that many people attending may be from NYC and differences in entrance criteria. (I've only found estimates of ~950 total student body for AUC and 2198 for SGU; but AUC has a fairly high attrition rate that it sends to SMU, dunno about SGU). Anyone know the general feeling at any of the popular hospitals regarding graduates from the above 3 schools? I'm a little off of Ross because of the enormous class sizes. SGU looks to be getting there as well. AUC is growing too, but most estimates seem to put it at less than half the size of the other big 3. And, I've heard the May class is like 50 people. Definitely the kind of numbers I like. I know there are a lot of threads comparing AUC and SGU, but anything you guys can add along those lines here would be much appreciated. I'm mainly trying to get a feel for how competitive these schools are for those difficult residencies(i.e. Orthopedics, Derm, Rad Oncology) and states (CA and TX). And, anything you can offer about problems at each school (AUC is easier to fly to, Grenada has a 5% laptop tax, a lot of sly landlords in both, and some high crime areas in St. Maarten...) |

SGU probably has as big a class size as ross; as for NYC, either school will do. For texas, ross will be easiest probably follwed by sgu only for the track record; but sgu has the same texas hurdles (ie they look "case by case" as all other schools). Ross, because of a mistake a few years ago got expidited review by the state of texas and now doesnt have the same hurdles.
Aside from state licensure, (and good for you for looking) check out the usmel pass rates, % of kids who make it to the boards with their class (ie without fail/decel/drop out etc.), residency placement and then lifestyle, cost of living etc. good luck. Id say for the most competitive residencies, the question is do you want those residencies. You may not know now whic is fair enough. BTW- the tax stuff, flights into the islands etc, whike annoying stuff, i wouldnt let make my decision for em.

SMU seems to have lots of students from NY as well. The reason why you dont have any practicing yet there is b/c SMU got full NY approval about 1.5yrs ago.
I would say 20% of my class of 160 are from the NY area. Good luck with your decision. |
