Decent GPA but bombed the MCAT. Any advice would be appreciated

I'm a senior Biology major. My science GPA is 2.9 and my overall GPA is 3.1. I have no idea what happened on the MCAT. I was scoring 9's and 10's on all my practice tests and ended up with an 18N. Because of my GPA I had pretty much planned on the Caribbean route but now I don't know what to do.

I have good LOR's, I shadowed a Doc for three months this summer, I did medical volunteer work in Belize during my break last winter and I'm a P/T Aide at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitaion during my school breaks. I know that I have the dedication and I have pretty good study habits. I was initially thinking SGU, ROSS, AUC and St. Chris. Now I'm in shock!!!

I've been following this forum for about a year and you all have had some great advice about all these schools and some others. What can I do? What should I do? Any advice and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

keep going

Hi.
FYI. Not all overseas schools need MCAT's. Ours has their own entrance exam. You will do it. Write it again if you need to. You have a great GPA & experience. Keep going.

To the other guy. My husband is 40 and I'm 35 with 2 small kids. We are living in Slovakia, doing medicine in Bratislava and work in Vienna 2 days a week for a small 25 EUR/day so we can do this. The academic stress is nothing compared to the financial stress for sure. Oh, to have to just study. I think you too can study. Look around, there are lots of decent schools that you can go to if you are American you can get money to go. Look for places with lower cost of living and you will be fine.

Good luck to you both. S-

MCAT

WHile scores on the MCAT are importnat, how is everybody ranking with the last test? I have seen a lot posts where people who were getting mid to high 20's on practice tests were getting scores in the low teens. I am curious as to whether the distribution lies far to the left for the last exam. If anyone wants to quench my curiosity, thanks!

Andy

You'll get in

You'll get into a Caribbean school with an 18 MCAT. Some schools don't even require it, so the fact that you studied for and took the MCAT says something and would probably be favorable to those schools that don't require it. You have respectable GPA's and good volunteer/work background. Just apply to the schools you mention. They are all good choices.... maybe throw out an application to Saba... they are another decent school.

PS

Oh, I forgot, how do most of the worlds medical colleges get by without requiring the mcat?

UK entry

In the UK you usually need A-Level results of AAA/AAB and usually an additional AS at grade A, plus demonstarable work experience to secure an offer of an interview.

Some schools have tests on top of this requirement. Undergraduate admissions tests include the BMAT (www.bmat.org.uk) and GAMSAT for Penisular Medical School if you are not a school leaver.

For the Graduate courses, entrance exams are the norm and include the GAMSAT ( http://www.gamsat.co.uk/ and http://www.acer.edu.au/tests/univers...tuk/intro.html), MSAT ( http://www.acer.edu.au/tests/university/msat/intro.html ), PQA ( http://www.smd.qmul.ac.uk/courses/pqa.shtml ), BMAT and school specific examinations, ie that for the Oxford GEP.
