Here's a link to the article:

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/courant/...wering+the+Bar

Unfortunately, its archived and pay only, so all you get to see is the abstract (below) for free.

MED SCHOOLS THAT FLUNK Series: First of two parts Med Schools: Four That Flunk Med Schools: Lowering the Bar [1N/5/6/7 SPORTS FINAL Edition] Hartford Courant - Hartford, Conn. Author: JACK DOLAN And ANDREW JULIEN Date: Jun 29, 2003 Start Page: A.1 Section: MAIN (A) Text Word Count: 3136 Abstract (Document Summary) The schools -- the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico, Howard University in Washington, Manila Central University in the Philippines and Meharry Medical College in Nashville -- ranked at the bottom in separate analyses of three databases containing records of disciplinary actions against thousands of physicians across the United States.

Other medical schools also fared poorly in The Courant's review, but only Guadalajara, Howard, Manila Central and Meharry appeared in the bottom 5 percent of 200 or so schools ranked by rates of disciplinary actions against graduates in each analysis. Together, these large, well-established schools have produced more than 600 doctors cited by licensing boards for negligence, incompetence, sexual assault, drug abuse, fraud or other problems.

The schools represented were then ranked according to rates of disciplined graduates. After eliminating small schools with insignificant numbers of graduates, only Guadalajara, Howard, Manila and Meharry consistently stood out among the schools with the highest rates of disciplined doctors in all three databases.

Well Terri is the hardest, Loan to Learn are sharks!, Key was the best option but they are gone if you loose Federal. They did finance other schools but pulled out with saying that with out DOE number you are too much of a risk. So if the Staffords go I think they will go too.

For private there a few other new players like Xpress and Private Sallie Mae but you will need a credit score of 650 or better and or a cosigner.
Let this be a wake up call clean up your credit!

boss, I think it is still in the markup situation but this part of the story doesn't forebode well for Ross/SGU/AUC's grandfather clause

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours of this morning — finishing at about 6 a.m. — on three major pieces of legislation. One would cut $12.7 billion from the federal student loan programs, mostly by returning to federal coffers enormous subsidies that now go to lenders when borrowers are paying a lower interest rate than the minimum one guaranteed by the government, although fees or interest rates paid directly by students and parents would also rise.

What does the above have to do with the grandfather clause? I only see references to the subsidies the gov pays.

So far the govt has shown they are cutting expenses. That would show a bias towards cutting.

The only way that would have anything to do with the grandfather clause is if the money never came back to the government, in the form of defaults; the money eventually must be paid back, whereas subsidies are an expense. If the gov is cutting short-term expenses -- that are actually long-term investments -- then their short-sightedness is stupid.

My question is, "What is the REAL default rate of Carib students?". We know the default rate for big three grads is very low. What about the huge number of students who attend for one or two years and fail? How many of these students default? If it is a high number, then the big three are indeed a liability to the stafford program and more money may be lost than gained.

MD's as a group are not large defaulters. But our govt is in a mood to cut money for professionals and getting out of the way of private businesses like loan programs/banks. The Big 3 got in on a bonanza but it would appear it will end. That is what lobbyists are saying on the Hill.
