If this effort by Sen. Sessions keeps more students on American soil to study medicine (MD or DO), in the end, it’s for the better. I know he is receiving a significant amount of support from many individuals and organizations regarding his stance on this issue. I will have to make a sizable donation to show my support, and encourage others to do the same.

Anyone who feels the same way should consider something similar.
why dont you enlighten us here how this will keep more students on US soil studying medicine oh wise one? its not like we choose to come to the carib and leave slots open in the states.

this bill is not ordering more allo schools to open more slots or schools. hell, his main lobbying group not too far ago called DOs cultists. i think this is egocentrism at its worst.

the only thing this bill will do is assure that more true IMGs with hard to understand accents are in the residency programs. im sure the american public would rather see somebody that they dont have a problem understanding.

in a perfect world, there would be the same amount of us med slots as residency opening............ unfortunetely we do not live in one even though you might think we do.

Donating to a Senator just to try and elminate your competetion is really lame. This certainly isn't going to help your school legitimacy issue, and is just sad. Federal loans or not, we will still be here, licensed in all 50 states, until they increase enrollment in the U.S. The big 3 are still a GREAT investment, considering we are proven schools, with fully LICENSED graduates, who work in the U.S. and pay back their loans with a default rate of .1%.
So, go ahead and donate, but it's not going to help you any.

Dear Senetor Sessions,
I am writing you to inform you of my situation as well as many others regarding your stance on federal loans for AUC, Ross, and SGU. I have lived in the state of Florida for 12 years. This state has very few medical schools (in relation to our state population) that were fully accredited and open when I graduated from Rollins College in 2003. It was my dream to become a doctor since middle school. I majored in Biology and had a GPA of 3.60. I took the MCAT and received a 26.
I applied to all the schools in Florida, as well as many throughout the country. I didnt get into any schools in the state of Florida because it has gotten so competitve here with the shortage of in-state med seats.
I got rejected from all of the other out of state schools even though my stats were equivalent and in a few cases higher than many of their entering classes. The problem here was that the other state schools give preference to their in-state residents.
I didnt want to lose hope so I applied to American University of the Caribbean. They are one of only four schools approved by the state of California's strict approval process. I just recently finished basic sciences on St. Maarten. Basic sciences consisted of all the book work and classes that are offered the first two years at most US medical schools. We used the same books and were taught by many former professors of those US schools.
After basic scices, I will be doing the remaining 2 years of clinical clerkships in ACGME approved hospitals taught along side US medical students rotating with me. I will have taken the same licensing exams as them as well. The only difference between my education is that I studied my first two years of book work in another country.
I are writing you because of your stance on taking the federal loans away from my school that I will need to use in continuing my studies.
I am aware that there are many "diploma mills" popping up across the Caribbean. However, these three schools are not anyone of them. They have to keep up proper education standards to retain California's approval. I think it would be wise to visit one or all 3 of the schools affected before making such a decesion that will affect many aspiring American doctors.
Currently, there are thousands of more residency slots than US medical schools seats. It is unrealistic for this to change anytime soon. IMG's are filling these extra slots. Without them, American healthcare would be dangerously thin.
Taking away federal loans is punishing US born citizens because they are from a country that can't produce enough US soil doctors to supply the growing population. The only result of this is not more US students filling in those extra slots because there are not enough of those students. This would favor IMGs from other areas of the world with the same lack of US oversight as the Caribbean. The difference is that the Caribbean students at least will do there clerkships under US supervision whereas the true IMG from a medical school on the other side of the world will do all there school without US oversight.
Please change your stance and help ease the shortage of US doctors by continuing to allow more US citizens to become doctors instead of putting a road block in front of us and outsourcing these avenues to non-US citizens. We are all qualified if we all pass the propoer exams and complete the proper residency programs.
Thank You,
Scott *****

Fantastic.

How exactly will this measure help keep US students in US medical schools?

Answer: It won't, unless:
  • The AAMC schools immediately open up more MD spots (which they aren't doing in any significant number presently)
  • AACOM (DO) schools expand very rapidly, even more rapidly than now.
BTW, should the measure come to pass, it may mean very bad news for SC, as the Big 3 will be forced to compete for students. And as far as competitive advantages go, the Big 3 have plenty in comparison to SC. Be very careful what you wish for.

Some people should just be ignored for their lack of intelligent comments.... He's a prime example. It doesn't matter what school you attend everyone should be on board with this. Having SGU, Ross, and AUC loose stafford loans will not directly effect me but indirectly it will. If we stand by and allow these people to take away their loans (that they are truely entitled to) then not only do we due them an injustice we do an injustice to ourselves as well. I have sent out several e-mails on this subject and hope that this will end in a positive fashion. I encourage you all to do the same no matter what carrib school you attend. If we allow them to remove the loans without hearing our voice I can assure you that in the years to come there will be something else that they are trying to remove.

I think there's something Shady with Sessions really! I think there's something else to it (maybe he's just and idiot) Of course he comes from a tobacco state. But this does not help the US just hurts it! Also he acts like students just graduate and into residency, What an idiot! How about USLME 1 and 2 and some programs want minum scores? He clearly has some kinda agenda against offshore schools. Writing this idiot will only get the letter in the trash or deleted. We need to write the advocates on our side and make sure to vote this idiot out of office all you in Alabama, Ya hear?

your right.....have you ever seen the "yale mansions", the presidents house, cars etc? probably doubtful.....but that money is just as much federal loan money.....and anyways, your argument doesnt make much sense bc you are alloted a specific amount for federal loans $18,500/academic year.....all surplus is private loans, which im sure those companies are very happy to cover. The problem with losing federal loan status is you lose the fafsa number and cant take out these private loans to cover the excess cost.....its more the private loan money thats surplus, not the federal loan
