Any chance for me?
I posted this message under the SABA form, but did not get a response, so I thought I would try in the Main Forum with some re-write.
I have been a Mechanical Engineer for large corporations for 9 years now. My wife is a Family Medicine doc and loves her job. I have been considering medicine since before my wife entered medical school, but never pursued it because I felt one of us needed to be working. I feel I am now ready to leave this corporate hell and do something that will make me feel like my life meant something. I know due to my age (35) and GPAs, I have no chance to gain acceptance to a MD program within the US. At this point, I am considering applying to Carib schools, Charles University in Prague, or a D.O. program in the states. I have heard it is very difficult for engineers to gain acceptace to medical schools. Do you guys/girls think I have any chance of being accepted by these programs with the following background? BSME '93 - Baylor University, 2.8/4.0 (>3.0/4.0 for science) MSME '95 - Texas A&M University, College Station, 3.8/4.0 PhD '95-'98 (did not finish) - University of Texas at Arlington, 3.5/4.0 (15 hours) Is it better to take the pre-med courses (chemistry, organic, and biology) in the US or do the extra year at the medical school? |

I read somewhere Ross will take anyone apply, and I am sure some other small/newer schools will take you, because all carib schools are here for money. So it's your choice to pick out the most legitimate one that suits your budget & preference. Regarding pre-med, general concesus I got from this forum is take it in US because then you save a year living in a less desirable place, and more time with your family. And you end up with more choices for med schools, because not all schools offer pre-med courses. If you want med school bad enough, start applying. You won't lose anything except the small application fee from applying. I know a computer guy in med school who is doing quite well. And 35 yrs is not old either. Gook luck. |

have a look at st chris
they seem a flexible place - but it means first 18 mths in UK before finishing in USA.
I think you stand a good chance with them - and they have a good rep Like anywhere go over for a long week end to look around - before commiting yourself |

Yeah, you do
I think the caribbean is bitter sweet.
Sweet because it gives you a chance. Bitter because my admission letter could have read nothing more than, " I want to be a physician, because I like what I see on ER" Point being that most everyone gets accepted, unless their is some major flaw behind the curtains. I applied and just knew I was going to be accepted. I'm sure other schools may have you on a wait list or make you wait a bit longer, but I think everyone gets in. When I got accepted, my reaction, "ok" I expected it...No biggy. Perhaps I understand all too well what needs to be done. The caribbean is about being given a chance, some with second chances and those with mid life carrer changes. Most importantly as I think one may have already eluded to, is finding out what school best suits you. Being that your wife is an MD, you may want to attend a school that allows you to set up your own rotations - being that she can "hook you up" with teaching hospitals. Just one example. I'm sure the're will be some others that you will move along the way. But only you can know what's best for you. Good Luck
