Kigezi Medical School Licence Revoked

The National Council for Higher Education has cancelled the operating licence for Kigezi international School of Medicine (KISM) as the tertiary education watchdog toughens on sub-standard institutions.

The council in a recent meeting also rejected applications by Fairland and Uganda Pentecostal universities, saying they did not meet the conditions for offering quality higher education.

However, Bishop Barham College and the Lubowa-based African Bible College were granted provisional licences to operate as universities.

The proposed Global Open University of Uganda project and Financial Markets university project were granted letters of interim authority that allow them to plan and mobilise resources but not to admit students.

Dr. A.B.K. Kasozi, the council's executive director, said in a statement on Tuesday that the council decided at a June 27 meeting to review its March decision to give KISM three months to gain financial stability.

"The council decided to revoke the provisional licence for KISM as it was no longer tenable in view of the collapse of the operations of the school in the United Kingdom," he said.

****** Mpambara, the school's executive director, yesterday said the institution had run into problems but that they were planning to transform it into a tertiary institution offering diploma courses in paramedical discipline.

"We have already informed the council about our intention," Mpambara said yesterday.

"We shall apply for a licence for a tertiary institution and we will use our existing excellent facilities in Kabale to offer courses in health sciences," he said, adding that they would later upgrade back to university status.

wow

haha.. kigezi wasn't up to UGANDAN education standards.. good luck to all the grads come licensing time. Real shame though, i know a few people who went there and they all got a solid education, decent clinicals (many of the sgu/ross sites) and had a blast working in a clinic in uganda for six weeks. My friends are graduating senior residents now who are real worried they wont be able to work in many states as a result of the school closing.

It is a major problem. Kigezi had a unique 'education' style so it is difficult, perhaps impossible to transfer to a reputable school with it.
