boards - ?

I am about to ask a silly question: what does "to do well on your BOARDS" mean? meaning USMLE or residency or....??
New to the field, please explain.

boards=board exams= USMLE STEP1 (and 2 and 3)
but usually when ppl say do well on their boards.. emphasis is placed on step 1..
