Sure. Competition SHOULD NOT exist among students from different schools. What are you competing for?? Competition does exist among schools FOR those students. Which is a great thing for the students (as S&A points out) because it makes the schools more student friendly. Why should people care that Saba got CA approval?? Couple of reasons....It means that schools still CAN get CA approved, and it means that people who were considering say Spartan and Saba before, may prefer Saba now. If Spartan wants to maintain its market-share, then it will have to become CA approved to be competitive.

When it comes to dealing with any Caribbean school, you have to approach it like a business. That is how the admins do. When they go to bed at night, they are not kept awake worrying about whether you will pass the USMLE. They worry about making money. They will spend the least amount possible on the students. Fortunately, there is an insane amount of competition in the carib medical school market. Schools have to maintain high USMLE pass rates, good residency placement etc. to attract more paying customers.

I know that Dr. **** (the guy who owns AUC, for those who don't know) could care less about what I did my residency in, or that I am doing exactly what I have always dreamed of doing. He is very happy that I wrote him a check every semester. I've spoken with him a few times after graduation during visits to the island. He never asked....

I suppose your too busy charging off to kick some Persian gluteal to speculate....so you dodge the question and go off on a treatise of Spartan greatness. Fair enough, Sparty.

Saba is doable on Teri...St. Eustatius might have to cut back tuition or find additional funding, St. Chris will have some trouble because of the weak value of the dollar's impact on cost of living (not to mention the senegal charter thing), Spartan will keep chuggin along as is, SMU is in the same boat as Statia, except for students who do the masters at St. Joe's to get the staffords.
Then there is always schools like Xavier....they are Teri approved....what's their tuition?
In other words, Wolf, many schools will probably go down. There are many many more than what you just mentioned and you already admit that they will have to bring down their tuitions. Even Saba which has a very good tuition in comparison to the rest, will force you to tighten your belt a few notches. It will be very tough, especially going thru med. school and not knowing if you will be able to afford next months rent. There will be many changes, Wolf. Big storm coming. SAVE AS MANY AS YOU CANNNNNN.... -s&a
In other words, you don't know any more than I do.

Wolfy,

No one can say anything for sure in the off-shore medical school world. This is just my prediction. You may not agree and I may be totally wrong but only time will tell. Something has got to give. These schools will have to make adjustments, otherwise, no one will be able to afford them. -s&a

I hate to bash the little schools but I can see why someone will sell their house and go someplace like Saba, they have CA approval and are starting to accumulate experience. On the other hand, St. Christ, St. James, etc, etc, I do not see the attraction to these schools. They are very young, with a lot of problems, almost no history, very few licensed grads and higher tuition than even Spartan. Why would people go to those places? I must be missing something. Now, I know a lot of people from St. Chris are going to get mad at me but this is just my opinion, I always felt this way. Also maybe, there is something that I am missing?? Maybe, they have something very special?? I don't know?? But if they are not careful, they will be the next Grace and Kigesi... -s&a
I mean come on guys.. why would you go anywhere else when spartan offers you a free set of steak knives after 3 semesters of tuition??!?!?!

BTS, St. Chris closed in 2000 and then reopened as a new school with new ownership, right? The present management isn't connected with Dr. Harrington and the State of Oregon concerns on the original St. Chris?
