    U.S. vs. German medical school

    Hello,

I am a U.S. citizen, 30 years old, have a B.S. in economics (with good GPA) and am now thinking of applying to medical school. I took almost no science during university, so as I see it, my first option is to take a post-bac pre-med program in the U.S., which I've researched. However I'm fluent in German and am possibly interested in studying in Germany - the cost of schools is a big thing, also I lived there for 2 years and really loved it. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether I need to take any science or pre-medical courses before applying to these schools? I mean, the German students entering are often basically coming out of high school as I understand, also the courses are 6 years which I believe includes the necessary science education - does this mean I can simply apply as I am without taking any prerequisites?

    Thanks!

If you took the science classes in high school and have good grades, you could have a shot. It would CERTAINLY be a cheaper alternative, and the German medical schools are excellent. You might, in the interim, takes some science courses at a local college or university just as a refresher to get your chops juiced again for the med school slog. It would also show them that you are serious. I would check out DAAD (The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): "Change by Exchange") for more specifics.

While the German schools are definitely cheaper, you might also apply to some of the Irish schools (Atlantic Bridge: US and Canadian students studying medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine in Ireland) as a competitive and extremely viable backup, as they have 5-year programs for graduates in non-scientific disciplines. Either way, Germany or Ireland, you would receive a great medical education.

Ich wuensch' Dir recht viel Erfolg, was?
