Petition to increase the number of GME residency Slots

I got permission to spread this around. I suggest that we all do the right thing and sign this. It is much better and worth while than talking about my home town of NYC's approval!! This will honestly show by signing this, how much do you really care about your life - while studying medicine - as saving someone's life.

Now, if you are gonig to sign this petition, let your voice reach to Washinton D.C., then give me a HELL YEAH!!!!!

    Dear Friends,

Here is the link to sign a petition requesting President O to call upon Congress to increase the number of Medicare-funded GME residency training slots: http://wh.gov/QL0. Please click on this link and go there today to sign the petition. Ask your friends and family members to also sign the petition. Anybody can sign the petition. We need 25,000 signatures by May 11 for our concern to be taken seriously.

There is also a template for a letter (attached to this email) that All of you who are ECFMG-Certified MDs need to download, edit, print and then mail to the president, your state senators, and members of congress in your district. The blue, bold-faced parts of the letter are my own, so you need to edit them and make them your own before sending.
We also have a Facebook page. Click on the following link and please like the page, not just the comments.
    http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/US-IMGs-United/272022859543414
You can also follow me on Twitter @garantoine.
Let's keep the pressure on, until Congress effectively increases the number of Medicare-funded GME residency slots.

Thanks and good luck to all!

    Garry

I'm fairly certain she is. You'd think an IMG that won the lottery and managed to match would be more supportive of fellow USIMGs/IMGs but apparently not.

The petition simply calls for an increase in residency spots overall. Not just for IMGs.

I am still trying to figure out why you did not apply and kept on applying to North American Medical schools before coming to Windsor.

We are all going to be physicians (if we pass the boards).

This forum is the place to start talking like one. This forum is the place to be presentable like one.

We have to act the part and communicate intelligently if anybody is going to take us seriously, especially coming from Caribbean schools.

Just an FYI to whoever DOESN'T understand it.

" Those slots should also cover US citizen and Permanent Resident International Medical Graduates (IMGs)."

The petition _explicitly_ mentions Permanent Resident aka green card holders(i.e. like you became when you won the lottery). What it does NOT do is call for an increase in availability of visas specifically allocated to non-citizen FMG to allow them to pursue graduate medical studies in the US. That would be a MUCH more controversial position.

IEEE-USA News Release: IEEE-USA/HARRIS POLL: U.S. Public Overwhelming Opposed to H-1B Visa Expansion
In 1998, a poll showed 82% of Americans opposed an expansion of H-1b visas.

By comparision: 20% of folks in The Bronx still opposed entry of the US into WW II after the
concentration camps were liberated(basically 80% is a REALLY solid consensus).

What I think would be worthwhile here is to conduct some internet polls on this general area to see what areas important to USIMG have broad public support. The key issue here _REALLY_ is demonstrating areas of public support. Congress will defy the public when money involved-but they will at least be careful about doing so when that is pointed out.

numbershacker. Effectively the right to sponsor or not to sponsor visas relies entirely upon the residency program itself. The federal govt is unable to mandate that programs sponsor visas.
