    residencies for Canadians

I have heard that its generally harder for Canadians compared to American citizens to obtain residencies b/c of some visa issues. Is there any truth to that?

    In sevaral words -

Residency require work permits in the US. So if you are a canadian citizen with no work authorization, then it might be hard. But however keep in mind, obtaining a work permit in the usa is easiest for canadians.

its not about "work permits"...a residency program has to be willing to sponsor you for the visa...some programs simply don't sponsor visas, so you will have to already have a visa, GC or be a citizen.

Hello. Rok is correct. The way things are going now getting residencies for canadians will be very tough. As many U.S. medical schools are currently in the process of opening up and also many U.S. citizens are going offshore for medical education. In saying this also Medicare pays for Residency spots period. And to argue the fact that a Canadian citizen does not give one cent to a U.S. citizens or GC holders Medicare Tax dollars. Every year program directors have a meeting last year it was in Atlanta, GA. and One man attended it whose U.S. citizen daughter graduated from a carribean school and didnt get residency even though she had passing scores. So he spoke up and said why is my daughter in 250K Debt with no job and i am paying for these residency programs. Many of the program directors applauded him and realized that this was true. So the windows of opportunity are now changing for Canadian IMGs. Its the same for U.S. Citizens Canada doesnt hold many opportunities for U.S. citizen IMGs so this also upsets many Americans. So if your a canadian citizen it makes it a hell of alot tougher to get a residency in the U.S. and Rok is actually right some programs actually have filters set on there cpu that take out Non-Visa holding applicants.Due to the fact of increased paper work and added fees they must pick up and also the instability. If a canadian imgs family is in canada he may leave for something else if it opens up or may get home sick there are numerous reasons to be scared to hire an IMG from canada. And another thing is that if your from the south they have a really bad stigma about canadians in general. Sorry but i had to be the one to burst bubbles just telling the truth.
