Does anyone know of an existing list of US medical schools that accept foreign medical school students?

I have not seen such a list.

Keep in mind that there are very few spots for transfer students, as US med schools fill up. In essence, the only way a spot opens up is if someone drops out. Very, very few do.

Those that are able to transfer usually do to a state school with an admissions policy for state residents or a private school. Those that make it have extremely competitive stats both pre-med and high Step 1 scores.

Anyone considering attending a med school abroad should not count on transferring into a US school, because their chances are very, very low. If you go abroad, prepare yourself for the duration.

this has been addressed before; please do a search on "transfers". Also note the list really changes year to year and its highly unlikely a student will do so successfully; those who were at least waitlisted initially stand the best (though rare) chance.

transfers

going to a carib school and planning on a transfer is a recipe for failure. it is too rare. plan on graduating from wher you start. my class at Ross had a record number at 16, out of a class of about 170. the lowest score for step 1 that i heard was a 248. the other and main problem is that in order to tranfer, you need to have the luck of the US school having spots. either through people taking a year off, or failing. schools we filled from ross were ohio, pennst/hahnemann, tulane, chicago med, NEOCOM, and a school in texas i think. not sure about others, those i know for sure.

the problem with using the usmle as a guide is that most transfers occur before the usmle is out. However the point is very well taken: its rare to do. do not come to a caribbean school expecting to transfer. Most transfer students were at least invited for interview the first time they applied but had to go abroad.

research

believe it or not i actually did research on this...i found a list of american medical schools and then emailed all of them to find out the answer to this. many never replied but out of those who did i had about 6 yeses with or without restrictions and here are there emails to me:

Quote:
Harvard Medical School:

We require that academic work done outside of the United States or
Canada be supplemented by at least one year of study in a college or
university in the U.S. or Canada. If you have not met this
requirement, then you are not eligible to apply for admissions. All
of the foreign students that have been accepted in recent years have
earned a baccalaureate degree from a college or university in this
country or Canada.

In many countries students enter medical school directly from advanced
secondary school. If you are already enrolled in a medical school,
you would not be eligible to apply for admissions. We are unable to
accept students who wish to transfer from another medical school.

The availability of financial aid to foreign citizens is less
favorable than for students from the United States. Certain loans
coming from the United States Government are restricted to U.S.
citizens.

Our academic requirements and application procedures are listed in the
Medical School Admissions requirements book published yearly by the
Association of American Medical Colleges. All applicants must take
the Medical College Admissions Test administered by the American
College Testing Program (see www.aamc.org).

Dartmouth Medical School
Dear Prospective Transfer Applicant:

Thank you for expressing an interest in transferring to Dartmouth Medical School. Transfer applications may only be considered for entry into the second or third year classes, and is only possible when places are made available in a class as a result of current students leaving or taking leaves of absence. Typically, if we have openings, the number is very small. A decision regarding whether or not places will be available for 2004-05 will be made no sooner than late-February 2004. The deadline for transfer application materials is April 15 and decisions are made during the late spring months.

You should be aware that transfers from foreign medical schools are considered for the year two class only and, unfortunately, we are unable to offer financial assistance to foreign citizens who are not also permanent residents of the United States. When making admissions decisions, we give preference to students at American medical schools who have a compelling reason to transfer to Dartmouth.

Also, we do not accept transfers from schools of dentistry, osteopathic, chiropractic or veterinary medicine. To be eligible for transfer consideration, you must have been matriculated as a medical student and be in good academic standing. If your current medical school requires passing national boards in order to be eligible for promotion, then this requirement must be met before matriculation at Dartmouth.

If you continue to be interested in Dartmouth, please get in touch with us again in the New Year when we will have a better sense of our 2004-05 enrollment.

Please do not hesitate to contact our office again if you have any further questions or concerns. Best wishes as you plan your educational future.
Sincerely,
Andrew G. Welch Director of Admissions

In accordance with established guidelines the following criteria must be met before we can consider an applicants’ request for transfer. An applicant applying for transfer must:

– Be eligible to return to, or be able to continue in their medical studies should they choose to.

– Transfer into the second or third years of our medical program.

– Meet all requirements stated in our catalog (can be viewed on our web page <qcom.etsu.edu> for a first year student.

– Have successfully completed a curriculum which is acceptable to our Admissions Committee.

– Other requirements may exist not covered above.

Best wishes in your pursuit of a medical education and in your efforts to transfer.

GWU

Students eligible to apply to our second or third-year classes are those
from U.S. or Canadian schools of medicine, those from foreign medical
schools listed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and those enrolled in
osteopathic schools. Students are eligible to apply if they meet our
specific curriculum requirements. All Students from foreign medical schools
and osteopathic schools must provide a passing USMLE Step 1 score (we cannot
review students from these schools with only one-year of medical school
coursework). We cannot sponsor for the USMLE. U.S. medical students
applying for the third year must also submit a passing USMLE score.

Advanced Standing cannot be granted for physician assistant, chiropractic,
dental or podiatry programs. No applications are accepted for the fourth
year class. The number of second or third year positions varies from year
to year. Applicants, if qualified, can apply specifically for the second or
for the third year, or they may express a willingness to consider a position
in either year.

In addition to the USMLE score taken by June 30th of the year in which an
applicant is applying (if applicable), an applicant must submit three
letters of recommendation. One must be from the dean of the medical school
or osteopathic school at which the student is enrolled stating that the
applicant is eligible to continue in that program and giving the reasons for
transfer and an overall evaluation of the student. All applicants must be
in good standing and be eligible to reenter medical/osteopathic school, if
their education has been interrupted. It you cannot meet this requirement,
we cannot accept your application for transfer. A small number of
applicants will be offered interviews in the early summer.

If you are interested in transferring to GW, please note that applicants
must be either US or Canadian Citizens or US Permanent Residents.
Additionally, all applicants must complete at least 90 semester hours at an
accredited US or Canadian college or university at the undergraduate or
graduate level. Eight semester hours (six lecture and two lab) must be
completed in each of the following fields: biology, physics, general
chemistry, and organic chemistry. Six semester hours of English (literature
and/or composition) are also required. The remaining 52 hours can be
completed in any field.

Please review the information and the curriculum at our website:
www.gwumc.edu/edu/admis/ . Once on the Admissions Website, under "How to
Apply", click "Application Process", then click on "Transfer Requirements".
The application is currently available however, do not submit your transfer
application until February 1, 2004. Application, letters of evaluation,
transcripts with medical coursework, and course descriptions may be
submitted to our office between February 1 and May 1 for entry in the Fall.
All application materials must be received by May 1, 2004.

Thank you,
GW Medical Admissions

Mercer University School of Medicine

We appreciate your interest in Mercer University School of Medicine. At the present time it is the policy of the Admissions Committee to consider for transfer only legal residents of Georgia into the third year. In addition, you must be currently enrolled in a medical school in satisfactory academic standing, and have achieved a passing score on the USMLE Step 1 examination. The acceptance of transfer students is dependant upon the availability of places in the class. The number of spaces available varies per year from zero to two. It has not been the practice to fill all the available places each year. The application cycle opens January 2.

If you can comply with these criteria and remain interested in applying for transfer, please send a letter stating so to the Office of Admissions along with your transcripts. The letter must confirm the following information:

I. You are interested in transferring as a third year student

II. You are a legal resident of Georgia

III. Currently enrolled in a medical school in satisfactory academic standing

IV. When you took or plan to take the USMLE Step 1 examination.

V. Have all transcripts, including the one from the medical school you are in now, sent to the admissions office.

The deadline to receive all application materials, except the USMLE Step 1 examination scores, is May 1. You can contact me by phone at 478-301-2542 or e-mail

Sincerely,

Kay Faust

Brown Medical School:

Thank you for you inquiry regarding Advanced Standing admission to
Brown Medical School.

Occasionally, students are admitted to the Medical School with
advanced standing. Individuals who are currently enrolled in an
accredited school of allopathic or osteopathic medicine located in
the United States or Canada are eligible to apply. Rhode Island
residents* who are currently enrolled in a W.H.O-listed medical
school outside the United States or Canada also may apply.
Individuals who already have graduated from medical school are not
eligible to apply.

Generally, transfers are made at the beginning of the third year of
medical school and only if spaces are anticipated in the class. In
addition to the selection factors described in the application
booklet, consideration is given to unforeseen and compelling personal
circumstances prompting the request for transfer. The Admissions
Committee also considers the degree to which an applicant's previous
medical education matches that of Brown University and prepares the
applicant for continued medical study.

The application packet will be mailed to you in December if openings
are anticipated for the following academic year. If you did not
include your mailing address in your previous email, please write
back with that information. The forms may be accessed electronically
at: http://bms.brown.edu/admissions in December.

* An applicant is considered a Rhode Island resident if a major
portion of his or her support in the past two years has been derived
from income or property subject to taxation in the state of Rhode
Island.
