TRUE- UWI is an excellent medical school and must “not to be confused with ANY pseudo-american-offshore medical school program.” This is very very true. We are dealing with chalk and cheese here- UWI being the cheese.

PARTIALLY TRUE ONLY: UWI does notand will not prepare you for the USMLE boards because that is not their mission.

Whereas it is true that preparing their students for the USMLE is not their mission, UWI students have traditionally passed the ECFMG exam throughout the years, up and including the current version of the exam called the USMLE.

In my era in the late 70’s we took the ECFMG exam as it was then called in January as a mock final prior to the UWI final in May. Many who scored 75% on the ECFMG exam failed finals in May. Students with relatives in the USA, or those who wanted to study or migrate to the USA would take the exam before finals as mentioned above.

Later the exam became known as the VQE before being called the USMLE exam.

UWI students continue to pass the USMLE today as one drinks Coca Cola or Campbell’s soup………..very easily!

At UWI, students buy and read British texts, in addition to all the standard US texts, such as Ganong, Guyton, Robbins, Netter et cetera interaliaque. Remember, Miami is not that far from Jamaica, and students travel to Miami to buy books which then become very readily available at both the UWI bookshop and at Sangster’s in Liguanea.

I have always said in my stints in pseudo-american-offshore medical schools that if the students are properly taught medicine THEY WILL PASS THE USMLE. This is what happens at UWI, good medicine is taught, and our students pass the USMLE when they take it, even though they are not specifically prepared for it!

correction...

I failed to phrase it corectly, what I meant was that their main FOCUS and priority is not to train you merely to pass the USMLE like most Caribbean offshore schools do.
