514 points Scary. The school is closed due to an investigation alleging that school officials were selling diplomas.
Back in the days a handful of school officials were caught with their hand dirty selling off degrees and as it happens in the D.R. the government closed the school. That does not mean that all activities were illegitimate since there were legitimate students as well that lost everything thanks to a few charlatans. All the "students" that were involved in the racket got caught as well. Same happened with 3 more schools in the D.R. that I am aware of. I remember when the news broke in 1984, it was a shocker.

511 points I am responding to the last post earlier this year regarding CETEC granduates.
The issue was not so much sale of diplomas as transfer of credits from alternative studies...ie Nursing / Physician Assistant/Respiratory Tech. There was a huge investigation of all CETEC diplomas and transcripts of graduates holding ECFMG credentials. No one who had legitimately earned the degree was denied the right to continue with residency or practice.
There are still schools offering this credit equivalent and, more recently "on-line" studies THESE should be avoided at all costs.

510 points I have been doing some research of the background of the doctor who misdiagnosed my pre-teen daughter and within hours she passed away.
I wonder if this doctor is one of those doctors who has 'bought' his degree from CETEC since his claims he graduated in 1982 from that University.
Is there anyone out there who has graduated in 1982 from U CETEC?
Any help will be appreciated as I cry daily for the loss of my child to this incompetent who claims to be a doctor and of all the departments he work in the E.R !!!!

So sorry to hear about your daughter. Cetec grads were investigated and screened to the highest degree/standard by US medical authorities. Many many legitimate students busting their butts studying there. I would say Cetec grads had to prove themselves, skills, knowledge, clinical accumen to a higher degree than their AMG counterparts during grueling years of (little sleep) residency. Being scrutinized because of the school and a long standing prevailing attitude of elitist resentment by components of US organized medicine. The exams and the residency programs are very effective at producing competent doctors. If anything, it would seem AMG's can float through even while making mistakes and or being sub-optimally competent, because some programs measure quality by the % of AMG's they attract; very political.
I recall way back when, the attorney for St George Grenada Medical School (also Caribbean) went to court to protect the rights of our children to pursue their careers, he simply got malpractice claims data that showed the AMG's having a significantly much bigger problem. I'd be hard pressed to relate competence or incompetence to school of graduation. Although I did not attend Cetec many did and are fine physicians.
My heart goes out to you. I have a daughter also and I cannot imagine the heartache in losing her.

No disrespect towards AMG's as they also study long and hard, as we all do, but over the years I have noticed an alarming trend in that US schools have been implicated in a number of recurrent highly regretful events.
Just some that I can recall, although there are more
Possibly the worst case of serial pedophilia in US history Earl Bradley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dr. Bradley, a Temple University Medical Graduate. I would not call molesting children " competence"
The Craigslist Killer. He was a Boston University Medical Student
Dont remember name, but a Columbia Uni Med graduate that had amassed weapons in his home intent on overthrowing the government.
Very sadly yesterday, the man that killed and wounded many at a movie theatre, a Colorodo Uni neuroscience doctoral student.

510 points Hi I stumbled upon this thread when searching for information about this school and a Dr who claims to have attended here, graduating in 1983. Since this school is now closed, what is the best way to verify that his diploma is valid? His specialty is psychiatry, and I have already uncovered that he was sanctioned once in Delaware.
thanks in advance for your assistance!
