NBME must be making a killing just from the exams.
The exam is offered at testing centers in the United States and abroad, five to six days a week year-round, except for a limited period in January

Rules Sex Discrimination; Says Must Accommodate Decision To Nurse
BOSTON, MASS., September 26, 2007 - A Massachusetts Appeals Court judge overturned a lower court decision and ruled a nursing mom must be allowed extra break time to express milk during the nine-hour clinical exam. In the case of S C. C v. National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), Judge K ruled:
In order to put the petitioner on equal footing as the male and non-lactating female examinees, she must be provided with sufficient time to pump breast milk and to address the same physiological and other functions to which those examinees are able to attend.
Judge K continued in his ruling,
. . . [w]ithout the allocation of an additional sixty minutes, the petitioner must make a significant Hobbesian choice: use her break time to incompletely express breast milk and ignore her bodily functions, or abdicate her decision to express breast milk, resulting in significant pain. Under either avenue, petitioner is placed at significant disadvantage in comparison to her peers.
I am thrilled with the decision, said S C. This case is about all nursing mothers who are trying to juggle family obligations while furthering their careers. Its not about me. This is a step forward for women trying balance career and families.
C C of B& D LLP, the firm that agreed to represent C pro bono in this matter because of the important Constitutional issues the case raises regarding women in the workplace, said this is a defining moment for all women.
This is a victory for all women who are brought up from childhood to believe that they can successfully balance careers and being the best mother possible to their children. Women should not have to choose between nursing their child and pursuing their career. We are gratified with this ruling that recognized the predicament facing working women today in ruling that the Massachusetts Constitution protects women against unequal treatment because they are nursing.
Background

S C. C filed a lawsuit requesting a Massachusetts State Court to issue an immediate order requiring the National Board of Medical Examiner (NBME) to provide her with an additional 60 minutes of break time during the 9-hour exam time in a private location to pump breast milk.
Ms. C is a Harvard Medical School student who is scheduled to graduate in November with a doctorate degree in medicine. C also has a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Harvard Medical School. C has been offered a residency position at Massachusetts General Hospital; however, she must first pass a clinical knowledge exam given by the National Board of Medical Examiners.
The Board only grants a total of 45 minutes of break time that can be spread out over the 9-hour test day to tend to personal needs such as eating, drinking and rest room breaks. The Board has repeatedly refused to provide C with the minimum extra time needed to express her breast milk during the exam day. C is requesting the minimal time needed to express her breast milk, a total of 60 minutes. If C does not express her milk every 2-3 hours, she risks a variety of medical complications, including plugged ducts, mastitis and decreased breast milk production. Currier is the mother of a 4-month old daughter whom she is exclusively breastfeeding.

Think about it. Lactating although a normal physiologic process, does force a woman to take the necessary steps til lactation stops. It could just as well be an examinee with ulcerative colitis that has multiple bowel movements and needs toilet time.
If its any consolation, the woman having such a hard time with nbme is a Harvard student.

Not to mention the good folks that bring us the CSA and the money they are raking in on an exam that didn't exist until recently, and in my opinion, is far from necessary.

You might want to take a look at the 2 earlier threads on the exact same subject in the Relaxing Lounge -
here -

and here -
http://www.valuemd.com/relaxing-lounge/144720-breast-feeding-during-mle.html

I see from the NBME QandA (NBME® : About)
that they intend to fight this one and that it has not as yet opened any .... er... um... floodgates.

This is the most bigoted comment I have read, ever on this board.

You guys have problems with a women having an extra 45 minutes to pump milk for her 4 months baby? You folks need to clean your soul.

For God sakes, she has a 4 months old baby.Have you ever held a baby in your arms?Do you know what it takes to care for a baby?Do you know how much physical and mental stress a mother has to go through during the first 3 years of a baby's life?

Please be humane!!
Please be normal!!
A woman is a 'fellow human', she is a mom, sister, wife, friend etc etc.She is not the enemy here! Doesn't a women expect a fair deal while working, especially when she has a 4 months old tot?
