    Hospital/School Affiliations

Not to sound ignorant, but I am learning by the day through this site...
Am I correct in assuming based on recent post that...

In order to get credit by the state you'd like to be licensed in, your core rotations must be done at a hospital that has a SPECIFIC AGREEMENT with the school that I attend?

Can anyone explain this process in detail?

    Thanks

    ...

Yes, it must be a formal agreement of affiliation. The hospital must recognize your school as one of it's affiliates. It's NOT enough to just have a "contract" to train students for purely liability reasons.

Formal affiliation often means school having appointed clincal faculty members at the hospital, employing school DME's (Director of Med Ed)... etc.

    rotations

your cores yes; and for some states all rotations, meaning your outside elective at harvard can't count towards your credits. Check individual states.

    re

these are the exact reasons that all of my electives are not being counted for credits! what a pain...

i do everything at my home hospital, and take time in my summers and vacations to organzize rotations. i highly recommend that everyone going to a med school abroad does this, if it is possible.

    sometimes

sometimes you cant' case in point, a student from an offshore IMG place wanting to do radonc; he's going to have to do an elective at a place with a radonc residency. This will limit to some (fortunately minor) extent where he can go for residency statewise; for some, you have extra time and you can use that for said electives; finally, its been known to fineagal a "research" elective...during which you also happen to be rotating elsewhere. But you still have to produce from your "home" institution hospitals.
