International University of Health Sciences, Government of St. Christopher and Nevi, West Indies. They wanted the court

The Kerala High Court today restrained the Universal Empire Institute of Medical Sciences, a Kochi-based private institution, from admitting any student for its medical and dental courses unless the institution is recognised by the Medical Council of India or Dental Council of India as the case may be, or the degrees awarded by the university to which it is affiliated are treated on a par with the degrees awarded by the Indian universities.

Justice C. N. Ramachandran Nair issued the directive on a writ petition filed by P. C. Sunil, secretary, Indian Dental Association, Kerala Branch and another doctor.

The petitioners said that the institution was conducting MBBS, MD and MS courses without obtaining approval from statutory bodies like the Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India.

The petitioners claimed that the institution had been affiliated to the International University of Health Sciences, Government of St. Christopher and Nevi, West Indies. They wanted the court to prohibit the functioning of the institution.

Universal Empire banned last October

It's true, Universal Empire Institute of Medical Sciences (UEIMS) was banned from recruiting any new medical students in India by the High Court of Kerala on October 4, 2003. This report will be found on the web site of The Hindu. Just run "International University of the Health Sciences" and "High Court" in a Yahoo or Google search.

It is not known as of late January 2004 if that restraining order has been lifted.

UEIMS is the parent corporation, apparently, of the International University of the Health Sciences (IUHS), St. Kitts, WI. The Indian ban on UEIMS does not effect the IUHS campus program.

Although it cannot be confirmed yet if UEIMS has been properly registered to conduct a medical school in India, the website of the Medical Council of India (MCI) still does not list UEIMS on its approved list of medical schools. You may look for UEIMS or IUHS by going to www.mciindia.org, then click on "Tools You Can Use" which opens a menu. Select "Medical Colleges and Hospitals." Then select the "List of Colleges Teaching MBBS." The MBBS degree is identical to the U.S. "MD" degree. You will not find UEIMS or IUHS on this list which is updated almost daily. In the Indian state of Kerala, the home of UEIMS, there are 13 SOM's listed granting the MBBS degree and 3 SOM's granting a general MD degree. Neither UEIMS nor IUHS is on that list.

IUHS lists its relationship and shared faculty with UEIMS on the IUHS web site at www. iuhs.edu. Is this association part of the IUHS continuing deception? IUHS also lists affiliations with both the London Medical School and the London College of Medicine. The British medical council does not list either institution as approved.

The UEIMS situation raises again the critical question for prospective IUHS students: Is there really such a place at all?

Universal Empire ban lifted January 2004

Liveten18 is correct. The restraining order against Universal Empire which has some kind of partnership agreement with IUHS was lifted in January 2004. The Kerala High Court apparently ruled that Universal Empire was not establishing a new medical school in India since all Universal Empire, MD degrees would be issued by IUHS in the Caribbean.

More details required on Universal Empire Institute of Medical Sciences

Since how many years this medical school is functioning ? Have their first batch been awarded the MD degree by the IUHS. Have their students taken up USMLE Step I and II and what is the percentage passed. I would like the current students or past students to give their advise on this medical school. Where are the clinicals done ? Can the students do their clinicals in the US - Do IUHS have any tie up with teaching hospitals in the US for this facility. What is their fee etc. etc.
