Yes

P.R. is a Commonwealth of the United States. It's 3 main medical schools are all LCME approved and recognized as well as competitive so they are U.S. SCHOOLS. The 4th medical school is for locals only however it has an LCME visit appointed for November and it will not surprise me if it gets it.

You need a good GPA and a good MCAT to be admitted (3.40 and up in GPA AND BETTER THAN AVERAGE MCAT SCORES). If you know some spanish better, but the textbooks are in English as well as standarized tests.

All of them are excellent schools.

You need to have close ties to Puerto Rico for admission to the U of PR. I'm not sure about the other schools.

admissions to schools in PR

yes, Puerto Rico is a common wealth of the United States. If you look at all the lists of Medical schools in the country and go under the category of states, you'll see that Puerto Rico is right there (after Pennsylvania), however when you look at the lists of school under aamc theres only one, which is Ponce school of medicine, (university of puerto rico). No you do not need higher than the average Mcat, there average is like the low 20's 3.00 GPA. The only draw back is that you MUST speak Fluent spanish, (they will test this during the interview which is in spanish. All the text books and material as well as exams are in english, however most of the professors lecture in spanish. By most I mean out of the 11 gross anatomy professors , there is only one who speaks in english. The rest speak in their native tounge, This is know for sure because I spoke with one of the head honchos of the school and got the whole scoop.

Fact checking

Check your facts again, there are 3 LCME approved schools in P.R. I am willing to bet my hoouse on this fact. ALL 3 CONSIDERED U.S. SCHOOLS.

Not that I am picking up on you, but I lived there and have close ties in the P.R. medical community.

Cheers

Max

PR is chevre

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place. I would rather live in PR
than many places in the US. It takes a while to be comfortable
speaking spanish, so start early. Take a medical spanish class
and become certified as a Spanish language interpreter. Even if
you are a native speaker of spanish I recommend that you take a
spanish medical terminology class so that you know the difference
between terms such as vejiga biliar and vejiga orinal

Chevere pero...

Lo unico malo es la actitud del gobierno y de "mantengo" de mucha gente.

By the way, excellent post with references. Very objective.

Suggested route to visit schools in Puerto Rico

I am posting some information about the location of different medical
schools in Puerto Rico relative to the International airport that is
located in San Juan, PR on the northeastern part of the island.
Non stop flights that depart from Miami airport (MIA) to San Juan (SJU)
have a travel time of about 2:30 hours. A line drawn from Miami, Florida
to San Juan, PR would be slightly over 1000 miles to the southeast.

I used http://maps.google.com and the city and zip code listed on the
schools website. I rounded the mileage to the nearest mile. The start
and end points roughly aproximate the location of the airport and the
schools. The schools zip code that I used may be the PO box of the
school and be some distance from the actual school.

Suggested travel route
A suggested path to travel while visiting the different schools, would be
Airport (4 miles) -> UPR (8 miles) -> Bayamon (17 miles) ->
Caguas (53 miles) -> Ponce (72 miles) -> Airport

You would probably want to skip UPR if you are not a resident of PR.

Distance of school from main airport
Starting Point
Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
San Juan, PR 00937 0250
to
San Juan, PR 00936-5067 4 miles
Bayamon, PR 00960-6032 10 miles
Caguas, PR 00725 20 miles
Ponce, PR 00716-2347 72 miles

Some addresses

Universidad Central del Caribe
Ave. Laurel, Urb. Santa Juanita
P.O. Box 60327
Bayamón, Puerto Rico 00960-6032

Ponce School of Medicine
Physical Address:
388 Zona Ind Reparada 2
Ponce, PR 00716-2347
