i have already applied to University of Szeged but i'm beginning to prefer Semmelweis. would it be possible for me to transfer from Szeged to Semmelweis after starting studies there, and when would be the best time to transfer?

510 points Sure, you can transfer, as long as Semmelweis is willing to accept you and as long as you are in good academic standing. However, you will need to complete at least a year if not two or three before they'll let you transfer.Originally Posted by oritsegee
The downside of transferring is that you double your paperwork when it comes to getting your credentials recognized as well as licensure. In addition, residency program directors are probably going to ask why you transferred.
So, why bother with Szeged?
510 points actually, Szeged was the first Hungarian school i learnt of. When I went to apply, the agent gave me the catalogues of both schools but I chose Szeged. i wasn't sure of which was better ( d agent couldn't say too) but since they wrote that they are in the top 300 schools in d world, i felt it might be better to pick Szeged. I also felt I might be better off in a smaller town. Now, I'm not so sure dat Szeged is better, especially since it is a smaller school. I told my parents I want to apply to Semmelweis but they weren't interested. They said if I'm already changing my mind before going there, when I get there I will do worse. So I decided it may be better to go to Szeged and if I dont like it, transfer to Semmelweis.

510 points I don't know how much you are paying your agent, but it is probably a waste of your money.Originally Posted by oritsegee
The Top 300 designation is non-sense. The only reason the school is on that list, is because of Albert Szent-Györgyi's Nobel Prize for the discovery of Vitamin C in 1937 based on his work in Szeged. I don't think that it has much meaning for someone looking for medical education abroad in the year 2006.
As to which school fits you better, the only way to tell is to visit them in person.
You can only transfer to Budapest from another hungarian med school after completing the 3rd year.
P.S Semmelweis (Ignaz Semmelweisis was the dude which Budapest mdschool is named after) is recognized as a pioneer of antiseptic policy and prevention of germs infections...imagine how much just washing ur hands can do![]()
510 points I know of exceptions in the past (transfers after 2nd year as they had openings).Originally Posted by Dr.Evil
Also, the new curriculum structure in theory provides more "portability". In the end, it comes down to Semmelweis deciding if they have enough spots to accept someone.
510 points I think the best thing might be to go there and check out both schools. I hope I'd be able to do that. In the meantime, I'm applying to both since it's the same entrance exam for both of them.

Ok, I dont know about the new curriculum, but when I wanted to transfer from dote to Sem., after 2nd year it meant some of my courses needed to be "re-evaluated".Originally Posted by Miklos

yes, it is possible to transfer after 2nd year. i even inquired about it earlier this year. it is also possible after 3rd year. which i'm considering at the moment.
