    my followup

    ok, this is a fyi...

I have additional info from The Medical Board of California regarding University of Szeged. The University has applied for recognition of its English-language program. The outcome is unknown at the present time.

By the way, Semmelweis University English-language program is approved by the Medical Board of California.

    Hope this helps someone,

My girlfriend and several friends went there. They all have horror stories and hated it. They said that the quality of education is great however, they didn't feel like it prepared them for the boards. They also say that the school is completely unfair because each exam is oral and some proffessors will fail you if they don't like you. My girlfriend was failed by a female proff because the proff didn't like her. She was forced to then retake an entire year due to this one failed exam. I don't have any first hand experience of this school, but the 6 or 7 students here from Szeged all say the same thing.

    Good luck in your search,

    university of szeged

hi im in my 2nd year in the university of szeged, i can tell u that the studies there are good, but they they are just like any easturn eurpean school. u can get screwed over and a lot of ppl say its all abt luck. but if u are willing to study hard then go for it. just keep in mind that we are not approved in some states that u may want to work in, an example of this is california not being approved. the school office is very disorganized and may not help u very much. another thing is to live is cheap there so that shouldnt b a problem. ppl who have graduated from the schools in hungary have done well on the boards and and practicing. so its a good opportunity, just make sure to find out all the info, b4 applyin there. to get into 1st year or premed is very easy. and remmeber the school is all abt money. ok well hope this helped u

    re

don't know specifics about this school, but i would like to enter my 2 cents about eastern europe in general...

i would say that the quality of education in the eastern europe schools is very good. however, the exams, etc are much different than the US...as mentioned before, if you fail a class, you repeat the year. i my experience, i have hear a lot of people complain about unfair oral exams, poor usmle prep, etc...i just have never seen that. maybe it exists at some schools, or with a certain prof, but in my experience, if you know your stuff you pass. sure, there is bad luck to be had, but this has never led to a student failing that knew the class material...for the usmle prep, just do lots of practice questions. the material on the usmle is covered, you just have to reaqquaint yourself with the MCQ format, and the thinking process involved.

i also have seen transfers from most of the schools in the east...every one that i have seen transfer in due to a failure did not know the material and continued to do poorly. i also know of folks that transfered out of charles because of "unfair profs" failing them. they continued to fail in other places...so, be honest with yourself before going. ask if you can handle the material AND the adjustment to a completely different type of school. if that challenge seems to much, do not come east! it will bite you in the butt....

in short, the eastern europe schools do a great job for those who are willing to adapt to a different system. if you can't adapt, you won't do well at all...good luck!

info on the university of szeged

I agree with neil, alot of ppl transfer out cuz of failing a class. and its true if u kno ur material then u will pass, but if u dont kno everything then u may not pass. It is basically study on yr own approach. if u are willing to study hard and adapt to the culture and lifestyle then i say go for it. the school doesnt prepare u for the USMLE but ppl that go to a hungary school usually do well on the boards. Most ppl take the Kaplans 7 week cousre to help prepare. I kno alot of ppl who have get 80's and above on the boards and have residencies. the exams are based on orals, that may either a plus or a negative for some ppl.
