Cool What to bring to Israel....

NOTHING!!!
I raise this subject after I recieved some questions so I guess if one person has a question there must be some others as well.
I can only speak for Sackler studies, but I am pretty sure it is the same with other schools, you can pretty much get everything you need here. You can purchase things from book stores or even better you can get your stuff from students. Here I will extend an invitation to students of other schools (that may have a smaller student body) to contact me if they need and I will hook them up to purchase from other american students books that are more oriented to the american medical studies (BRS, MRS, Recalls etc etc). If these books mean nothing to you they will in a year or two, don't worry.
I would stay away from the big text books. Not because you shouldn't read but you should save the money and use the library books which can be leant for long periods (again I only know what is going on at Sackler).
As for other stuff- a stethoscope should only be purchased AFTER first year. You won't use it during first year. It is definitely something that you will bring from the states (unless you don't mind buying a used one- which isn't a bad idea- usually people sell very good, almost new ones for very cheap).
It is a tradition to begin the year with a sale of books and stuff from students. You can even get furniture and other stuff.
No pressure cuffs, ECG, x-*** machines needed. You don't need scrubs and I would only bring one white coat for anatomy lab (you can even bring a non-white smock). You will recieve a white coat as a gift from Sackler (at least that's how it was in the last two years)- that I would keep clean for hospital visits. I wouldn't even buy a dissection kit in the states- this might be the right place to mention that mine is for sale- (CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP). Even latex gloves for lab you can get here- but if you have a latex allergy I would bring gloves with me- not that it is impossible to get here, I just think it would be a bit easier to get them at your local CVS.
I urge you all to save luggage space for more important things like your favorite american candies, liquors, maybe a lamp, whatever. There is no reason to have to pay for extra baggage weight.
The only thing I would bring is a good laptop (macs are fine) and maybe a good external hard drive for the extra bulky stuff.
That is all I can think of now. For those of you that read through this whole thread I salute you!!! Good luck and please feel free to ask me any question and I will get back to you on my next procrastination break!!!

I will add just one thing-
More importantly is to bring all sort of shampoos, prescription pills and such, that you may have a hard time getting here. Anything that can help you maintain your quality of life is a good thing to bring. Leave med school stuff to buying in Israel.

Good stuff as always. Ill take your dissection kit. I do have one already, Used it for undergrad dog anatomy, but I cant find it, so I wont bother.

So bringing liquor into the country isnt a problem? I have... a collection.

Can you explain the power adapters, Im trying to see if an external drive bay I want will work with just an adapter. That way I can get internal HDs and use those USB style.

110-220v and 50-60 cycles?

I am going on the group flight, middle of august. I got my unlocked world phone ready for a sim card, and ill soon have my vonage shipped to me. They sell drive enclosures, that use internal hard drives and hook up through USB. They also have an AC adapter, so I just want to make sure I can get something with the proper 110 or 220v and 50-60 so I can just use a wall adapter.

Also is it possible to like, hook an american surge protector to a wall adapter and just use it like normal?

I have a lot of items that require power. Im ready to go to Israel now, but I have to wait a short bit.

A) Enjoy the states as much as you can while you are still there. Do little things that you won't be able to do in Israel later- for example: go wait in a line. Any line, anywhere. Just stand in the line. Enjoy it, because when you will get here it wont be anything like it
B) Yes you can plug the whatever you said to the plug- and that's about all I know about that.
I gotta run- any specific stuff I will ask people that can understand more then me, but basically- anything that works in the states will work here but on 220

Bring tuna fish.. lots of it.. cans of chunk white in water.. they don't have chunk white... you wouldn't believe the crap tuna.
If you're on the group flight, you've already paid for the 3rd bag, might as well fill it up.
I brought my Xbox (and Serge blew out the power supply, twice), and most of the rest of the bag was dedicated to my 200 watt Klipsch speakers, amplifier and subwoofer. You know, the things you simply can't live without. Also if you have one of those cars that George Jetson has that folds up into a suitcase, bring that too.

What's up Yaron, why aren't you studying?

My thoughts

While I agree that you can get most anything here, there are a few things I would suggest bringing:
  • Any non-prescription meds that you will want a specific brand of.
  • A Vonage box, if you are planning to use one. Vonage is a voice over IP service that many Sackler students use. Basically, for $20/month you will have a US number that your friends and relatives can use to contact you in Israel. It works over a high speed internet line, and it rocks. If you sign up for it after you get here and you have to ship it here, it is really a pain.
  • Bring a cellphone! They are expensive here, and you should not expect to receive one when signing up for a service plan. Call your current US provider to see if your current phone can be "unlocked" so you can use it in Israel. This is usually possible, but may require a few weeks of dealing with buearocracy.
  • Zip lock bags. People in this country are expected to tie their own bags, and this is not acceptable to me.
  • Your favorite brand of ball point pen, if you have one. I don't like the pens here, although the pencils and highlighters are good.
  • I would bring at least one white coat. The ones the school gave my class were all the same size, so a lot of people couldn't fit into them. Also, you need two anyway, because whatever you wear to lab will get too gross to wear to the hospital.
You do not need shampoo-- most American brands are available here.

Lastly, in packing your clothes remember that it is hot here for MOST of the year, and that you will dress very casually MOST of the time. I brought enough sweaters to wear a different one on each sweater-requiring day that I will be here for

You dont have to get the cell phone company to unlock your phone, you can bring any GSM (sim card phone) to any punjab with a phone store and he'll unlock it for you for $10. As long as it's triband or quadband (works on 3 or 4 different frequencies, as most of them do, or atleast the newer ones do) it'll work just fine in Israel and you can bring it back home and just switch the card and have a phone for home too. Israeli phones are expensive and you can't have Ebay ship phones into the country, customs will intercept them and you'll end up having to pay more than the phone is worth.

Good call on the ziplocks. They are the masters of magnetic and satellite technology but they've yet to figure out that if you put a zipper on top of the ziplock the bag doesn't open.

Yaron, you should get Giraffe's spicy fried rice.. tell them to hold the goose and lighten up on the onions and then you can bask in its oily deliciousness.
