Pending NY

I heard that this was the month in which IAU would attempt to gain NY accreditation, something they have been seeking and assuring the students of for quite some time now. Are there any updates in this important matter?

Theoretically, if IAU did gain NY accreditation, would that increase the # of hospitals available for rotations, and thus increase the # of greenbook core rotations available to IAU students?

I am a current student at IAU awaiting to take Step 1 in July and am wondering the same exact questions. We've all been hearing for weeks/months now that NY will be coming in May but I'm curious as to why the administration has not been very forthcoming with information as to exactly when and IF they are coming.

New York updates their website in May or early June after their site visits in the fall. The schools have to meet certain standards like MCAT, teaching, and standardized testing. Just check their website - the URL can be found in various places on VMD.

NY Site Visit Update

The NY Board for Medicine had a drastic change in senior personnel and site evaluators and had to postpone IAU and other medical school visits until the Fall. No date has been rescheduled at this time. It is important to note that this delay is at NY's request, not IAU's.

We will update students when we receive the official dates of the NY site visit.

Oh - interesting - so you'll will not have NY approval for at least another year from now then. Was talking with Dr C at Trinity U SOM last weekend. They have their site visit setup for this fall. Hope all goes well with your site visit.

Got to love how when I personally spoke to the owner of the school and the new Dean in Feb/March of this year, they already knew about the "overhall" and never mentioned anything about it causing a delay in the visit. The conversation took place over a conference call which in the end said that NY is coming in May,everything is going according to plan and not to worry. Goes to show what a load of you know what that was.

Add to that the school has not been responsive in giving the Fall 10' class "tentatitive" dates for when we could start rotations. The reason we want to know is so we can start making living arrangements because most of us are from different parts of the United States. However they responded by saying they can't give us anything until we pass step 1. Now what school will not give you an estimated date of when you can start rotations? I mean that is just ridiculous especially since multiple emails have been written asking such a simple question.

I dont think giving us "TENATITIVE" dates is something that outragous. I mean finding places to live for short periods of time without the schools help is not easy by any means. Its great that the school doesn't really care about the students and loves to do stuff last minute. Just ask the seniors that were ahead of me (howlly jolly on valuemd) what they are doing now. I believe there answer will be something along the lines of "IAU has no greenbook rotations other then IM and FP that were finished already and we are now currently doing NOTHING and waiting on IAU".

To anyone looking to apply to this school I would highly not recommend it. They claim to have made drastic changes since Fall of 07 till now but in actuality the only change has been the addition of a new dean and lots of false promises. Is it really a wonder why 5-7 students from my class (myself included) will be transfering as soon as Step 1 scores come in?

Question, what do u mean that they are just doing nothing? U mean to tell me after all that they are just chilling. That was a concern I had too, wondering what happens after u complete the rotations. I mean what is suppose to happen? I dunno. I don't think thats a good thing.

Ny

I knew that NY was not coming before my test in February. Actually, I started my transfer process in January prior to my test because of it. Besides, NY was late last time they came; in addition the approval process takes months to go through (official approve notice), then another few months to get any clinical rotations (in writing aka "contracts"). Many of those goods spots have been taken over by SGU last year and Ross over the past few months. Maybe by next year AUC and AUA will cough up the cash to buy whatever is left.

We used write 5 page letters to administration asking them to add sites ever since I started posting material on the SGA board on how SGU bought up spots and are blocking out other school like us. I believe RSPR41 will stand by me on that issue.

Housing is a BIG issue, I had a lot of problems finding a place for the retarded ICM program for only 7 weeks. On top of that, I never got my deposit back from the place school recommended until after Step one, $900 three months later (when promised 10 days), I wanted that cash for Step One.

There are only 3 students ahead of me, who have no clinical spots available from what I last heard after finishing IM and FP. The student ahead of them is the one who finished up and got residency. We were the only 5 who finished the 16 months without failure and passed Step One on the first try. The rest are 2nd/3rd time passers or transfers into the school counted as USMLE passers from IAU. Either way, so far no one who has failed a basic science course or transfered into the program midway due to problems at other schools have passed Step One on the first try. And about half who actually finished basic science without failure, went on to pass Step one. I've wrote many times, along with my fellow classmates, with suggestions on how to improve the curriculum in order to improve these numbers. Obviously passing the NBME "shelf" exams were not enough.

And I'm not exactly chilling, I went back to work as an RN... but I'm also preparing for an interview in 2 hours for transfer, wish me luck.

If you fail at AUC, SGU, or Ross why not transfer to SMU, if you fail at SMU, why not try another SMU.

Wait! Last minute good news!

The guys above me (in semesters) just secured surgery at Parkway Hospital affiliated with Lenox Hill last week. Again last minute notice, but IAU does eventually come through. This is one reason why I still stand by my previously post of even though I'm attempting transfer, I still recommend the school to some degree.

And yes, AUA. I'll post my acceptance/rejection in 2 weeks.
