Please Help

Hi all,

I appeared for USMLE Step 1 in 1995 scored 77. I took Step 2 in 1997 scored 81. I appeared for Step 3 in 1999. I failed. I am doing research since last 3 years in Psychiatry. I have a few publications and a decent resume. The problem is my 7 year limit is over with step 1. I have started preparing for step 1 again and plan to retake in this August. I got the permission to retake from Massachusetts Board. Somebody please advise if:

I am doing the right thing here.

I am an IMG on a J1 visa. I have applied for H1 and will be approved in July (for sure). I have also applied for permanent residency thru’ my employer and hopefully will get it in a year.

What is the rt. time for me to apply for clinical residency?

If I pass step 3 will I be able to do residency anywhere in US? Particularly, when the time line has ticked off. That is one of the reason that I am reappearing for Step 1.

I am really confused if I should be preparing for step 1 or step 3.

I really need some sincere insight here. Please help.

Thanks for your time.

Regards all.

advice

I don't think I advise you fully, but I just wanted to give you a heads up on your H1B visa.. Are you securing this visa through your research employer? If so, you must be aware that the H1B you possess will not be valid for residency...it is only valid for positions closely matching the description of the job that originally got you the visa. Therefore, you have 2 options: find a hospital that will sponsor you for a whole new H1B, or wait till you get your green card at which time you'll be eligible for residency at any hospital without any visa issues.
