j1visa statement of need letter

Our members don't see this ad.
Hello.
I am a canadian citizen and an international medical graduate,ECFMG certified and have passed MCCEE for what I have read on the health canada website that mccee is the minimum examination requirement to get the statement of need letter for the j1 visa. I am currently living in montreal but I would like to practice in Ontario.Could I get the letter from Ontario even if I am not currently living there? Do I need to be a resident of that province? I am going to do my training in psychiatry.

If you have you done the MCC EE already, and you can prove you are a resident of Quebec, and you want to practice in another province, you are eligible to receive a Statement of Need for PSYCHIATRY.

Thank you very much for the info. Now they ask for an action plan where I guess they want me to say that I'm going to pass the QE1 and QE2 during my residency and the board after that in order to get the license for when I come back. Is that correct?

What happens with the fact that psych in the US is a 4 year training and in canada is 5 years. Should I do the 5th year in canada if possible or do a fellowship lets say in child psychiatry in the us ?

I appreciate your time.

Yes, you have to do the MCC exams while in residency. Get them done as early as possible. The RCPSC exam can be done in spring of your PGY5. Then you can get a licence shortly after you finish the residency.

Do an ACGME-accredited fellowship in the US because it will count toward the fifth year. A fellowship in Canada will NOT count toward the fifth year.

An ACGME accredited Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship would be recognized by the RCPSC.

If you plan to go to Ontario after a U S residency you do not need to do QE1 or QE2 they accept USMLE STEP1,2,3. Also if you get an H1B you do not need the Statement of Need and can apply after residency to waive the need to do the MCEE too.

Thanks for the info. But I am not sure if I could go to Ontario since I am not a resident of that province. Applying for an H1 is another option if I pass step 3.

Hi!

In order to obtain H1B visa you need to pass step 3.
I verified on FSMB
It says that you need to have 1 to 3 years of postgraduate training (depending on the state) to be eligible to take Step 3.
How do you then accumulate those years without being eligible for the H1B visa?

Thank you.

Some of the states do not require you to have postgraduate training, for example Connecticut. There are other states but I do not remember them right now. So us IMG that need to pass step 3 for the H1 visa we need to take it in those states.
