Job in Canada after US residency??

Our members don't see this ad.
Hi,

We are Canadian citizens and my husband is just completing his last year of residency in Family Practice in the states. He went to medical school in Pakistan. He has written and passed the MCCQE1 & 2.

I just want to know if he can practice in Ontario once he has completed his residency. Somebody mentioned that he could work under a "limited licence." Does anybody know what this is???

Thank you
Sadia

As an IMG (MD obtained outside Canada/US) with US postgrad training, he would fall into pathway #4.

There are four pathways to licensure to practice by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Pathway #1 - Canadian MD with Royal College of Canada certification
Pathway #2 - Other MD with Royal College of Canada certification
Pathway #3 - Canadian or US MD with US board certification
Pathway #4 - Other MD with US board certification

Details here.

This license to practice is limited in the sense that there are two limitations placed upon it:

Quote:
The following conditions will be placed on the certificate of registration:
  1. The physician must practice with a mentor and/or supervisor until he or she has successfully completed an assessment.
  2. The physician must undergo an assessment after completing a minimum of one year of practice in Ontario. The certificate of registration automatically expires 18 months from the date of issuance, but may be renewed by the Registration Committee, with or without additional or other terms, conditions and limitations.
There is an entire recruitment group in Ontario (entirely free for job-seekers) called Health Force Ontario dedicated to putting bodies in jobs. Your best bet is to contact them and ask for more information. They have a good sense of the opportunities, and can probably answer a lot of questions about limited practice.
