Thread: Interested in Hungarian med

I am a canadian and recently completed my undergrad. I am in the process of filling out the applications for hungarian med schools. For those of you who are currently attending a med school in hungary, how satisfied are you with the quality of education in terms of professors and classes, and the testing system? What are the pros and cons of the hungarian med? I was initially going to apply to Carribeans, but I opted for hungarian meds in the end due to their more rigorous standards...which I assume would correlate with good scores on USMLE. Also, if there are any canadian or American students stuyding in Hungary, please feel free to respond. I would really like to know how you guys are faring with hungarian meds...

I don't study there but I can tell you that more rigorous standards won't correlate at all to USMLE because they ask the questions in PBL type way. You can make every course harder by adding unnecessary/irrelevant detail but if it's no use clinically and it won't be asked on the USMLE you really have no advantage. I really have no suggestions of where to go. Personally I'm going to either Poland or Czech but I speak Polish and Czech isn't difficult to master for Polish natives

i wouldn't necessarily characterize the hungarian medical education as "rigorous". if you're looking for a school that will prepare you for the usmle. then, my advise is to pursue the carribean path. however, stick with the schools with a proven track record, ie. sgu, ross, auc, saba.

in hungary, you will be taught a lot more unnecessary details. which are not required for the usmle. this is one of the biggest academic problems foreign students face in hungary. also, the lectures aren't that hot either.
another problem has to do with the exam format. the majority of exams are completed either orally or written or both.

i'm satisfied with my education. but be warned everyone is different. it may not be the case for you. also, there are a few north americans running around here who are doing pretty good for themselves.

There's more than enough fair share of Debrecen Medical School discussed here. Spend some time to read them.
However, the best advice, as always, is to find some time to come here (if you can) to see things for yourself.

You should master your study techniques before you come to Debrecen. Without discipline you will find Hungarian medical school quite hard.
