    Pecs in Hungary

Can anyone tell me about the 6 yr. program at Pecs. I am looking into going to this school. I have a BA in histroy, and found out I want to become a Dr. two yrs ago. The school in Pecs sounds like a good way for me to become an MD quicker than getting all my pre-reqs in the US, take the MCAT and then get into a med school. Pecs would allow me to transfer into my third yr. of med school in the US after 3 yrs. Any info would be helpful.

    Thanks.

    Hi.

I'm studying in the region (Slovakia), and I would just make one comment: I would be wary of a school that promises they can get you into a US medical school after 3 years. Maybe, but maybe not. That promise is not really within their power to execute - it is up to the US receiving school. In theory, it MAY be possible, but I wouldn't advise you choose this pathway for that reason. You may end up being here for 6 years. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I would suggest you ask LOTS more questions about this. Also, if you are thinking of Europe, there are lots of other schools to investigate (Charles in Prague, Szeged, Hungary, Semmelweis, Hungary, Comenius, Slovakia etc.) Prague is lovely and has all paperwork completed for loans & California accrediation (if that matters to you). S-

    whoa!!

I highly doubt that is accurate.. the med students from their prospective countries probably stand a higher chance of obtaining admission , esp a transfer???? into a US medical school.. in other words.. its really very very close to impossible.. wouldnt trust that at all..

any school will "allow" you to transfer. the best odds would be SGU or Ross though, they usually have a few each year. But, if you go abroad, you need to EXPECT to be there the entire time. it is very, very unlikely that you will transfer to the states. there are thousands of us that go abroad each year, and there are only a few spots (i would say around 5 maybe) to transfer into....

Thanks for your reply. I am new at looking for schools in Europe. I will look into this. What is life like working as a Dr. in Europe?

Ok, I disagree, but only with the number.

AGAIN, EXPECT TO STAY ABROAD THE ENTIRE TIME.

For nitpickers like Neil and I: There are roughly 120 LCME accredited med schools, admitting roughly 15,000 med students each year. Now, the drop-out rate is very small, but I think that 5 total is a low-ball. I read somewhere around 150/year, which would be 1%. How many of these are slotted to be filled is a whole 'noter question. SGU has a record of getting its most competitive students into US schools, but EVEN they say that no one should harbor any illusions about being able to transfer.

i just pulled the number 5 out of my butt...no evidence for that one...

but, i would have to say that if there are 150 spots a year i would be VERY surprised if there were more than 15 or so available to be filled. the vast majority of schools do not accept non-LCME transfers. i think 10% is a generous estimate for those that would even consider a transfer. your best bet is a private school, or possibly your home state school.

    From SGUs FAQ:

Can I transfer from St. George’s University to a U.S. medical school?
The chances of transferring to a U.S. medical school from St. George’s University range from 5-15%. Due to full U.S. enrollment, there are few seats for advanced standing students available in U.S. medical schools. While St. George’s University’s students do obtain a majority of those available seats, you should not enter St. George’s University School of Medicine with the assumption that you can transfer to a U.S. medical school.
