Is Hungary a good alternative to the caribbean
Our members don't see this ad.
Caribbean schools are rather expensive and with the credit crisis in the United States, many private lenders are pulling out of off-shore medical loans. Thus I would not even be able to afford the Big 3. My main concern is that I have heard the USA is increasing the number of medical students over the next several years. With this in mind, if I did graduate from a foreign medical would I be able to obtain a residency? |

Caribbean is an ok option, granted Hungarian medical institutions have been established for years, and are for the Hungarians also. I think that if saving money is what you are trying to do, then Hungary is not a great option. Medical school is expensive, even if you are a US grad. You are looking at at least $150,000 USD in debt no matter which route you go into. I would pick Hungarian over Caribbean for namesake though. I have a feeling the mod here won't like my view though, just guessing.

im gonna be a post whore today.
first off, whatup whatupdog6969? been a while . but i will have to slightly disagree with your statement to a respectable level.. Given medicine isnt cheap no matter how you slice it, Hungary is a good alternative to the carribean if money is whats on you mind,, and therefore your mind is on your money. I mean to shell out 30-40 grand a year as opposed to hungary's ten grand is a major difference. even tho hungary is 6 years and carribean is what... 4? But the savings doesnt really stem from what you spend on tuition. Living in hungary is dirt cheap. and like watupdog said, rather reputable. So it basically comes down to what your priorities are, and how you feel is the best way to spend your money. Either way dont look to walk out this whole ordeal with a full wallet. But where im from, the starting salary of any doctor more than makes up for it. peace |

I am telling you man, that cost of living, and tuition fees, cab fare, everything will add up to very very expensive in Europe. Main difference with the Caribbean, is that the Caribbean tuition fees are more expensive, however you do finish up two years faster. Hungary, you will be amazed, it is not cheaper trust me. Costs really do add up. Living in Hungary is dirt cheap? Wellllll um depends what sort of individual you are. If low maintenance, it will be respectable cost, but certainly not dirt cheap. If you are higher maintenance, it will be very expensive. Trust me, the costs add up. Then you factor in US clinical rotations, etc. It is not cheap to study and live in Hungary believe me. Now that the power of the dollar has gone down, and the Euro is in effect, things are much more expensive nowadays. Yes maybe 8 to 10 years ago things were very very cheap in Hungary, but not nowadays. I think that you will read this "Hungary is cheap" logo on certain recruiter's websites. Trust me it is not cheap. You will see for yourself. It really seems good, and looks good on paper, believe me its expensive.

true i hear that man, im just talking about when i went, or maybe im too used to things in Greece. When cheap i mean, bus, food, accommodations, and all that were quite a bit cheaper as opposed to greece or canada. I mean i went to Hungary for a week and traveled to 3 cities all with 500 euros,,, roughly 700 bucks...... im not saying staying there for 6 years will cost pennies, but to me it wasnt an expensive place to visit and have fun in...just my two cents,....but to the original poster, watupdog is right, ure not gonna be living large with the money you save by going to hungary, if any.........but man...just do... for me canada gives up to 120,000 for abroad med students and 15 years to pay it back....dont worry about money...if you can get a loan, just get your education and deal with money later

Bus and Food maybe cheaper or comparable, but Housing is getting expensive, with internet, gas, electricity, etc. Yup, get loans, like Stafford or Perkins. Those were our federal loans. You should be fine, but definitely don't underestimate the costs of living and so forth, and its tough to keep up with the expenditures.

just living expenditures in general, and travel. Food, etc. Its doable, but it ain't cheaper like it used to be when I studied there. Life in general certainly wasn't cheap, but it was not as expensive as nowadays.
