So, I've done an advanced search, but was unsuccessful in finding anything...could any upperclassmen/women recommend what you should study before 1st semester? I have several questions going on concerning me about UAG. I was born in Jalisco and raised there until 10 yrs ago that I moved to US (CA).

I want to thank you guys in advance for answering the following questions..

My questions are as follow:

1) I understand that UAG is 4 years of school just like any other US Med school, but what is exactly this 5th yr pathway and why is it required? I know this year can be completed in GDL, but can it also be completed in California or does it have to be in NY? Also, why do UAG has to do an extra year (5th) and not the students from the Caribbean med schools?

2) Reading all the posts in regards of how students use old exams to pass their tests its just scary, I mean, how serious is the medical education at UAG? Why would this students be goofing off and using old exams, how are they going to be dealing with patients if they are essentially cheating to pass their classes?

3) How hard is it to get a residency in California? I am a CA resident and ultimately, would like to come back to CA and do my residency in either EM, FP or IM. I have eyed a hospital in Fresno, Ca and its the UCSF-Fresno/Community hospital. How hard would it be for a UAG grad to get a residency in such hospital?

4) The 4th year electives, can those be completed in a CA hospital or are they exclusive in NY?

5) What is the actual support of the professors and staff from UAG to their students? How supportive are they when it comes to classes, preparing for USMLE steps, etc? I am Mexican and I know how corrupt some places can be, especially a place that would benefit so much economically from a US International Medical Program.

6) What is the actual passing rate of USMLE steps 1 and 2? Do classes prepare you well, or are you more on your own? How much time is given to study for this test?

7) And Finally, reading on the way some of the exams are written (badly) worries me too. I mean, Arent the professors properly education on English Grammar, or what would make these exams bad written? What causes some of the big failures on exams, such as Embryo for this semester? Not studying, or simply the professor sucks?
