Hello All coming into MD1 for January 2010 semester. I am in Pm4 about to head into Md1 and just wanted to give all the people a heads up whats going to happen and to help you guys out if you have any questions.

MD1 is going to consist of Anatomy 1, Physiology 1, Histology, Epi and Biostats, and Intro to Info Medicine.

Anatomy 1 will be taught by Dr. Gil. Dr. Gil is a good teacher and he will call you out if you dont keep up with him. He a very traditional and strict teacher but he is a nice guy. Even though Anatomy isnt really a high yield on the step, when you are in MD1, it is the class you will be studying the most for. And just to let all you guys know, there is a quiz on the first day of class on the first chapter of the book, the introduction chapter. I personally talked to Dr. Gil and the topics we will be covering next semester is Head, Neck, Upper and Lower Limbs, just in case you wanted to get a head start. In addition to those, Embryology will be incorporated with Anatomy also. Before it used to be its only class, but the administration decided it should be with Anatomy because classes met one day a week. Every Wednesday and Friday we will have cadaver lab at the hospital with Dr. Gil and Dr. Segie. For this you MUST have scrubs, either green or blue. They will not let you into lab if you do not have a certain shade of blue or green scrubs. And it is more advisable to bring scrubs from back home, they are more cheaper and easier to find than on the island.

Histology will be taught by Dr. Barton. He is a teacher that knows his stuff, Histology is taught like it is a very detailed biology class. Even though it is not a high yield course either, we will need it for pathology later on. So it is important to go to lab classes and look at slides.

Physiology 1, Physiology is one of the most important classes taught in medical school (other than Path and Pharm). Those 3 Classes are the highest yields on the USMLE 1, so it would be best to pay attention and try to understand this class during the first two semesters. Physiology was originally a one semester course but because of the importance for it on the Step 1, it was broken down into two so students can understand it better.

Biostatistics and Epidemiology - Class where we learn about the frequency and demographics about disease. Not much info about this class. Sorry

Intro to Info Medicine - this class is a new class that i did not get much info on from the administration. I talked to the Dean of Medicine and he said this class is about the various fields of medicine...So well see how this class ends up.

Books:
All the books the school websites tells people to buy will most likely be used. EVERYONE SHOULD GET THEIR BOOKS BEFORE THEY COME TO THE ISLAND. Some people might get lucky to borrow books but thats if you get lucky. In addition I personally hear from students that its good to get some review books like Kaplan review books, if you can get a hold of them, or the USMLE First Aid books. Also if you can get a hold of any review material for any class, like USMLE road maps or BRS, its good to bring those for better understanding for classes.

Also if you have a mac, like myself, you should try to get a program to run Windows Programs on your computer. Programs like Parallels or Virtual Box. For Anatomy we will be using a program called ADAMS, which is a program to dissect the human body on your computer. Students have asked the administration to get the Mac version for this, if there is one, but no word on that yet.

Thats all i can think of now, if anyone has any other questions send me a private message or email me. Hope this can help. Seen you guys soon.

I went to my rotation site and the university refused to pay for it after they said that I could go there. Aside from that, my experience at Xavier was horrible b/c there is so much drama there. Just picture putting all the people that started drama from each of their prospective schools/universities and put them all in one building and you have the student body of Xavier. Also students have slept with professors to get by. Sometimes the administration don't even have control over certain issues. Its left up to the students to handle it. The classes were not that great and the school did not have equipment to properly teach the students basics. If you are coming into MD1 you are going to need to buy/rent a vehicle b/c you are going to have to drive to the hospital for lab, but the school doesn't tell you that either. From what I hear is that this semester the 40 MD1 students had to share 1 cadaver. As for the teachers, most of them are not even MDs. As the director of operations puts it, "They are basically the rejects from all the other Caribbean med schools." Also I did not get my immigration money that they said they would give back to me. I found out that the school charged double the price when in reality it is only $500. Even though they charged more for the permits, I didn't even get mine until I left the school. The school is also under investigation by the Aruban government for tax evasion. As for the amount of people that passed the step after leaving the school, it is not high at all. Barely 5% percent have passed. Overall I would have definitely gone to another medical school instead of this one. If you are thinking about coming here, DON'T! Also whatever "Xavier Administration" is trying to say on this forum is a LIE. I believed them and it was a big disappointment. All the school wants is your $ and as much of it as they can get.

I've read a lot of the Aruba/Xavier posts - and it's clear to me that I should stay clear from the Aruba-based location, but how about the transferring into the clinical rotations program and never stepping foot in Aruba - possible? I realize the financial situation is tough with loans, but assuming I could arrange payment - Is the transfer beneficial for an FMG?

A profile of me to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with:
US citizen, Finishing 2nd Yr Med School in April 09 (IMED listed, in India)

Doing well in school, however, it's a "5 1/2" year course here.
On top of that students spend an extra 1 year to clear Step 1 and 2.
Based on the timing of the normal residency match, you're looking at 7 years between start of med school and start of residency. With the transfer, I'm shrinking that by 1-2 years, and I'm getting US clinical exposure.

My option is to join Xavier's 5th semester program in Atlanta. Transfer all of my pre-clinical subjects (although I've already been on rotations in India for a year now). And after (hopefully) clearing Step 1, I'd continue to the supposedly green-book hospitals.

Does this seem worth the effort? Do the US clinicial experience and the US physician recommendations justify transferring into the Xavier Clinical Program?

Keep in mind, I'd never step foot in Aruba...it would only be clinical rotations in the US at this point. (In India, you have classes for 4.5 years along with clinicals for 3.5 years.)

I'm facing the exact same situation as stated above, what are your recommendations based on current conditions?
