Friday, October 31, 2008 The latest demonstration of confidence in the investment climate of Saint Lucia was on display last week when ground was broken for the construction of the home of the Destiny University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Vieux-Fort.
The institution, to be built near the Saint Jude's Highway, is an initiative by multi-millionaire investor ***** Singh and will be completed in 2010. Destiny University will become the fourth school to offer studies in medicine in Saint Lucia.
Mr Singh said the investment will provide much needed human resource training in an area now in global shortage.
For example, one of the things is this tremendous shortage of medical professionals, but the other thing that is happening is that they haven't been building any learning facilities either. For a whole bunch of reasons, which I am sure the Honourable Prime Minister knows about. It's called money; its called capital. Institutions like Destiny University will fill a void, said Mr. Singh.
I would like therefore to take this opportunity to commend Mr. ***** Singh and his group for the demonstration of confidence in the government and people of Saint Lucia. It is a pleasure to have you with us and it's a pleasure to have you engaged in providing an activity hinged on education, Prime Minister King said.
Meantime, Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King was symbolically presented with the promised mammography machine from Mr. Singh on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The prime minister pledged governmental support for the project, which he said is in keeping with the national education agenda of Saint Lucia.
The Destiny University School of Medicine and Health Sciences will be located on property purchased from the National Development Corporation (NDC). The NDC, which carries an investment mandate as part of its responsibilities, sees this accomplishment as another success story that will redound to boosting the Saint Lucia's economy.
