re:charles vs. semmelweis
Hello Neil,
Thanks for your reply. I would like to know if you have heard anything about Semmelweis? Or do you know anyone who may know how the school functions? Also, can you tell me how can I apply(to Charles U.), let alone, what is their requirements, if any, before applying to the 6 year medical program? Out of all the english medical programs in Eastern Europe, can you list the schools that you would recommend to consider or to investigate? Yes, I am aware this is subjective, considering what may be a good fit for you may be the opposite for me; however, I'm just establishing a starting point. This is not to say that your list by any means refer to some sort of ranking(s). Oh, as for the minority status, I am wondering if any med students are African decent? If not, would there be a problem if there is/are some in the medical program? I am just looking at the cultural aspect of medicine. Thanks again for your time and help. Kjadu. |

the most important one...
don't forget first faculty, which is at www.lf1.cuni.cz
typically, you need to have completed A-levels or some college (junior college is fine) and pass the entrance exam. the college is just helpful and not an absolute requirement. however, i can tell you that due to the high attrition rate of youngsters (esp. the 18-19 year olds from britain) the school is taking a long, hard look at the non-college students applying. those of us with university experience tend to do much better, so they are considering that experience when reviewing applications. that being said, it is still pretty darn easy to get in. the trick is passing everything and staying in! as for other schools in europe...personally, i would only attend the charles faculties or semmelwies. and, i would prob only really consider first faculty seriously, as they have the most americans and seem to be getting better at dealing with us. also, first faculty has applied for CA approval, and semmelwies already has it. best of luck with your decision and applications. |

Transfer
Hi Neil,
Both my husband and I are considering transferring to Charles University. He will be finished year 3 meds and I will be finished year 2. We are currently studying at Comenius University in Bratislava. The reason for our transfer is that we cannot get student loans to attend this school. It is recognized by Canada and the WHO, but the American firms who loan money to Canadians studying abroad won't finance us here and our resources are tapped. Is is possible for you to contact me directly as I have a number of questions I would like to ask. Do you really only have 2 north american students in each year? The one US firm 'CANhelp' (we call them can't help), aka Teri Corporation, aka international education foundation says that a school must have at least 20 american students (as well as meet other criteria - i.e. audited financial statements etc.) What level of prep (if any) does Charles give for USMLE's? My email address is: takach1@stonline.sk I would also be happy to answer any questions about Comenius University in Bratislava. Kind Regards, Sarah |

re.
actually, it is very difficult to get in touch with grads of the program. as far as i know personally there are only 1 or 2 grads from the english program in the states. there are said to be a few more, but who knows where they are. most of the students stay in europe. there is a guy in erie, pa in family practice. that is the only one off the top of my head.
as for usmle results, there is a large group taking it this year. so far, two of us have taken in and we both passed. before us, there were only random folks, like 1 or 2 per year. but, we have a 100% pass rate! that doesn't mean much, cause the students that take it tend to be the better students. if you come here, you had better be ready for a czech education. this school is not about passing the usmle or any such crap. they are about training doctors the way they know best, which is the czech way. i am very happy with the education...but, if you are looking for the us style, this is not the place to come. |
