help - Applying to unis in Czech rep.
hie i kind of need help here, im trying to apply to Charles university the thing is im applying from the UK. i have applied through CMUCAS (affiliated with the Abbey College in UK) and the thing is when i applied i had to pay £50 for registration, it seems now i have to pay £50 to take the entrance exam in June then if i get accepted i will have to pay another £1800 non-refundable to the Abbey College just for handling my application.
i'm jus wondering if anyone thats applied from the US or from UK had to pay so much money just to apply i don't know if this Abbey college thing is really legit, i can't seem to find anyone from UK that has applied there. is there any other way of applying without having to pay so much money, is it possible to apply directly to the unis because im wondering why i have to pay so much money to the Abbey College. |

lots of people here are from abbey. i have no idea how it works, but it seems pretty tough to get around it.
one option is to apply via the new york office. it will cost 50 bucks or so to apply, and a trip to NY. send me a pm or email and i will give you the email addy. there is another student on here, mrcool who is considering applying and having similar issues. i recommend that you contact him, and see what his plan is. best of luck |

u can apply to other schools but if you want to go to the 1st faculty then its via Abbey. I'm proably being a little harsh. Abbey does arrange for you to sit the entrance exam in England and they offer a prepartory course/seminar. So if your a high-school student ot leaver then its great. Abbey does serve a purpose- although a very small one. The reason I bear a grudge is because I am older and do not need ANY of the services they have to offer. PM me if you have any other Q's |

Mr Cool I think you're being more than a little harsh. I know a bit about CMUCAS through my brother who went through it. At first you do think the extra money is a bit much, but they do all the marketing for the uni or unis which is what the charge is all about (as well as the admin stuff). Because its seperate your first instinct is to get around it but the way I've understood it is that its like wanting to buy a can of coke, or a car, or whatever, but not wanting to pay the money that those companies pay on advertising, which they pass on to you in the price of the product. It's annoying, but it only looks bad because it is charged seperately - the unis are surely happy with it because they know how much publicity they get from CMUCAS. The 'product' (horrible word in this context I know) is advertised more in this country so costs more. Economics I'm afraid.
As for their role (CMUCAS), once you come to accept the cost the actual service is pretty good. My brother was doubtful at first but following their revision course he got through fine and is happy right now, and the presentations and questions were reassuring. |
