Interested in CMU...but
Hey all,
Just discovered this website and have to admit that it has helped me, however, it has also confused me a bit. I am interested in CMU and want to consider it, nonetheless at this forum I have fallen under 2 extreme views about the university here. Either people are extremely positive about it or extremely negative. Is there some honest person out there who can give me a balanced outlook on the college. No college is perfect and no college is absolute crap either. I would appreciate a balanced opinion from current students because I know that colleges always hail themselves as the best. So, tell me what are some good things about the college and some not so good things. Thanks! |

Pardon me, I don't mean to be rude but I haven't gone thru every single thread about CMU at this forum as I just found it today, not to mention that I am in a very difficult situation currently. I'm already enrolled in a med school overseas but things aren't exactly working out for me. Started to browse and found the college's website and then found this site. I appreciate the fact that someone mentioned that it is not listed on ECFMG or the WHO, however, from what I've read, CMU just opened this year, so don't they usually say that new schools often take a few years to get on the list? ok children. reread the Terms of Service that you've agreed to. infractions will be handed out to all those in violation. no further discussion.

Polarized viewpoints
You should read the St Christophers threads. They are quite similar because there was a long battle between two groups with very different viewpoints. The people who attended the school were very positive. Those who were not at the school were very negative. In the end, those who were outside were shown to be correct.
Those who attend a new school have every reason to promote it because they are out of a degree if the school closes due to low recruitment. In the St. Chris case, we saw students recruiting others simply so they could keep their own heads above water. Thus, you need to be wary of positive news from students at fledgling schools. The valueMD community is generally pretty good at exposing problem schools. You know the school is new and striving to recruit students. There are questions about its charter. What more do you need to know? As teratos has pointed out, the destination is the same whether you go to a new school or an old school. -- you don't get any bonus points for taking a risky route. Thus, it is foolish to take unnecessary risks when there are proven low-risk alternatives. |
