Re: J-1 and H-1B Visa info for Canadians

This post is in reference to anoncan's (now edited) post immediately above, accusing me of being someone else:

Sorry, you're wrong. I know of Paras Naik, he was the moderator of the previous Canadian IMG forum. I am the new moderator and I am most definitely not him! If you check the Ross forum you'll see my frequent posts there reveal the location of my medical training. Out of respect to Paras I feel it's necessary to point this out.

I cannot understand why your intentions are so malicious. No one here has been given false hope, I am presenting all the facts and letting people decide for themselves whether such a path is right for them. It IS possible to return to Canada to practice. I have provided the weblinks to the relevant licensing bodies so people can see for themselves what steps are involved.

What I can't understand is why you go to such great lengths to convince people NOT to return to Canada. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but what's your vested interest?

Re: J-1 and H-1B Visa info for Canadians

Do you need to apply for visa to do your clinicals in US? If yes, how long before do I need to apply for it?
Another question: What happens after I get my H-1B and finish my residency? Would I be able to practice in US with H-1B visa?I think H-1B visa is valid only for 6 years.

Hey fellow Canadians!
I am a young'in. I will be sitting for Step 1 in March 2006. Thereafter, I will start my rotations but I require a VISA to do so. Which VISA is it and where do I go to get one. My IMF school wants me to pay $700 to its lawyer to get the process going. I'm certain there is a cheaper method.

Any words/info from my wiser fellow Canadian IMFs?

J1 info for Canadians

Go to other sections on this forum. The info you have just been reading is out of date and not accurate. USMLE exams in Ontario are accepted on par with the Canadian exams so you won't have to do both anymore. Do a search on the forum and you will find that you can get back to Canada after a US residency. If in FP or Psychiatry you will have to write Canadian boards, but the residencies are accepted on par. IM is likely a bit tricky because of the way the residency programs are set up but you can check with the Royal College about the details.

visa

CABG, you will require a B1 visa. The $700 your school is asking you to pay is for a packet of info that you would present to the US immigration officials at the border. It proves that you are a student in good standing and that you are going to be doing unpaid rotations in the US. I agree, the price is outrageous. Conceivably you can get the visa without this packet, but if they start asking questions at the border you won't have all the documentation to satisfy them.

Could someone give us an update on this info?

MCC QE 1,2 and USMLE acceptability/equivalency?

H-1, H-1B, J-1, OB1, R2D2, C3PO..etc.

I have done a little homework...but I'm not a Med Student...so my searches tend to cratch the surface instead of getting into some really useful data.

Thanks!

About USMLE and LMCC

While I can give you an unofficial summary, I recommend you consult the authorities on Canadian medical licensure. In Ontario The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Homepage

Summary

In Ontario only, doctors who have completed residency in the United States can seek licensure if they have all steps of the USLMEs but not the MCC QE I and II, using the comparable examination policy. The licensing committee must approve the application for licensure. If the doctor's medical degree was obtained outside Canada/US, and s/he has obtained the American Board diploma in the specialty, s/he can apply to the Medical Council of Canada for an exemption of the MCC Evaluating Examination. Medical Council of Canada / Le Conseil médical du Canada

About J-1 Visa and MCC EE

Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada can use the J-1 Visa to enter the US for postgrad training. In order to obtain the ministry of health letter (ECFMG requirement), the IMG/MD must have already passed the MCC EE.

About H1-B and MCC EE

If the IMG/MD uses the H1-B to enter the US for postgrad training, the MCC EE is not required.

For information on OB-1, R2D2 and C3PO, go to the movies.
