practicing in Canada post IM residency in US (attn:CanIMG)

I just wanted to make sure CanIMG reads this since he seems to be more informed about this.

I'm about to start an IM residency this coming July in the US on an H1 visa but I am still hoping to return to Canada post-residency (family reasons). For some reason I have in my head that since a US IM residency is only 3 years, to return to Canada (4 yrs IM residency) and practice as a general internist, u must either do an additional residency year in Canada or to do a fellowship in Canada or the US. Is this true? Or can I just begin practicing as an internist immediately after finishing my residency? I'm specifically looking at BC and Alberta. Any info u can provide would be appreciated. Thanx!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I've already passed the MCCEE and MCCQE part 1. I'm planning on taking the QE part 2 next year. Thanx!

You are correct. You would have to do an extra year's residency or fellowship, unfortunately there is no way around this. Congratulations on securing your residency...can I ask what hospital you will be at?

more questions

I'll be starting at St.John's Hospital in Oklahoma. I have another question for u.....what if u do a chief resident year during your US residency to bring it to a total of 4 years? Would u be able to go back to Canada to practice as an internist right away or would u still need to do another year in Canada?

Also, as I understand it, most people start applying for fellowships during their 2nd year. Do u know if fellowship matches go thru CaRMS in Canada or is there a completely separate thing? Thanx!

Congrats, but you must face reality

Hi S. Chow,

I can give you detailed info regarding your situation, but the modertator of this forum will probably delete it.

So you will have to read it at:

http://www.[blocked by request].com/openletter.htm

I think once you finish IMG in the U.S. you should STAY in the U.S.

There are about a dozen reasons. READ the LINK above.

Trying to get a one year residency spot in Canada is close to impossible.

Just ask anyone!

Best of luck.

more questions

Hi S Chow,

As far as the particulars of US residency and its convertibilty to Canada, I can't speak authoritatively on the subject having never gone through the process myself. However, if you do a 4 year US residency and complete objectives of training for Canadian licensure, I would think it would be acceptable. For a list of requirements specific to your desired specialty, check the Royal College website here:
http://www.rcpsc.medical.org/english...ion/index.php3

Whether or not you'd have to do a year of practice in Canada before being granted a provincial license depends on the province. Manitoba does not require the year, BC I think does. So, if you want BC you'll probably have to go to Manitiba or Newfoundland or someplace for a year. I honestly don't know all the specifics. If you do some research on this topic and come up with some insights, please do post them here for our benefit. Take care,

Nica7

Nica7: I originally started out in the Dominican Republic at UNIBE and then transferred to MUA for my clinical years.

Thanks for the links Anoncan and CanIMG. I'll check it out. But u forgot one of my questions. Do u (or anybody) know how u apply for fellowships in Canada? Is it thru the CaRMS or is it completely something separate? Thanx!

fellowships

Stepchow,

Regarding your question, fellowships are not secured through CaRMS, it is a separate process.
